My jack is wired into hot that goes to breakaway switch, this is way wired original 1976, never had prob.

Mine is wired directly to the battery....but it will work if the battery is dead if trailer is plugged to the tow vehicle.

Arrrrrg! Trying to avoid running yet another line to the battery but it's looking like I may have to.
Had btthe same symtoms on my 76 ovelander it was the ground fuse corroded. Sprayed with contact cleaner and removed/reinstalled several times, has worked since.
It could be the battery ground connection too.
