Hey everyone, getting ready to redo the old airstream and I need some help on what needs to be done first. We need to strip the shell to have the frame re-welded, but if someone could tell me what I should do before that happens it would be very appreashiated. This is my first undertaking of such a large project. Are the windows the best place to start?
Read the threads by others who have done it. links to the major renovations If you take the time to read those threads and others like them, you'll have a really good understanding of what you want to do and how you can get there. Some of those threads I've read over and over and they've helped me so much with my project.
Ask any question you want and somebody will help you, but soaking up the info that's already out there will let you make a plan for your project.
Welcome to the forums. I started a redo project (65 Safari) this past May. I would strongly suggest you start with the frame, axles, sub floor. Sounds like you need to remove everything from the inside first. Please keep updating your progress as we all are interested. Good Luck!
That looks to be a 66, 67 or 68. I think they are my favorites. Your lucky also that its just the flat windows that need replacement. Take extra care to protect the side windows.
Have a plan! Know where you are going. This will be expensive to a point. Read all you can right here on the Forums and ask questions.
Go to the Texas Vintage Rally in Feb...its near you. Look and ask!! Plan the work and know you will enjoy it.
Thanks for the help guys! Its a 66. Ok so I guess ill start by ripping the frame. I also know that the tanks on this camper arn't the originals. So im going to need to source out those. Anything I need to know about?
Yes im very glad all the side glass is in good shape. The only thing im worried about is the bracket in the front has some damage where the glass slides into the top. Ive heard the mounting brackets for the front are very hard to come by.
I guess im going to take a day to took through all the threads on here and then start my plan of attack. Me and the girlfreind are also going to be at the rally in feb. I'm sure I'll get allot of good ideas!
I'd agree with Jezibels, but for a different reason.
With no windows, baby, the rain will fall (inside). Unless you have a nice big dry house to store it in, that is.
Oh, and also, look for anything else that will let water in: that will be the death of many things inside (floor, furniture, counters, etc) if not checked.
The exterior looks nice, but if that roof leaks... ::tsk::
