My '62 Globetrotter diner project...
Hey guys
Wanted to touch base now that we've started fabrication of my 62 globetrotter mobile diner
Basically i gutted the thing and have begun the stripping of zolatone on the interior which is going great.
Notice the massive cutout in the back, we are attaching diner stools to the outside, and building a wraparound counter top for everyone to sit and enjoy the food. Serving windows are in as well.
Lots more to go, will update as we go. Questions, comments go ahead...
Please don't be mad about cutting it open, this is going to be a beautiful project!!

So you are going to serve food out the side window + have diners come inside to sit at the rear where the window is cut out? Sounds kind of cramped to me...

I like your design and your idea for your GT Diner. Good luck!
I hope you can polish the interior aluminum. That would look neat.

Stupidnoob,
You said, "Please don't be mad about cutting it open, this is going to be a beautiful project!!"
Not mad, but I do always question why folks feel a need to do this to the 50's, 60's era trailers that many folks want for restore vs. just getting a 70's, 80's era trailer that are dime a dozen?
Most folks that will eat out of this trailer and the new hole cut in the back and sides will never know the difference and the "Cool" factor will be the same.
But in the end, it's your trailer and you can do with it as you please.
Enjoy,

It was a matter of finding a trailer that was 18 feet or smaller for downtown city usage.
Stumbled across this and grabbed it cheeeeap. Couldn't find a 70's smaller unit up here at all just 25 footers and up, too big for our laws

CAn someone give me some insight how the p.o. I stalled this horrible subfloor?
Mines a 62 and I want to redo the subfloor, what exactly has he done here? Looks like he didn't remove the shell which is the right way to do it? From what I understand you have to remove the shell??!?
All I see are a bunch of screws holding this thing down did he possibly put it over top of the old subfloor?

I suspect he just screwed it down over the old floor or what was left of it. Take the screws out and see what is under there. The subfloor should be between the frame and the shell. It is not a bad idea to remove the lower skins to see what is going on from the bottom and the condition of the frame.

Big question for me is... Can you replace the subfloor without removing the shell from the frame?

Don't let anybody tell you that you can't do anything...circ saw bit the big one and all I had left was a pry bar and a hammer
And I got the subfloor up, it was a crap ton of work an I'm really really sore...but it's done

Awesome score
Forgot my dad manages an aircraft plant and can get the 2024 alloy sheet for cheap.
Does anybody know the gauge of the interior skin?

Bumping this to show some progress... Almost ready for polish
Getting very close for polish, then it's just install the appliances
1. Still have to finish framing in the back cutout where the diner stools and counter top is
2. Finish stripping remaining roofing compound the stupid po put everywhere on here.
3. Lay down laminate counter top.
Install appliances!!
Huge job so far but will be done in approx 2 months

Not for everybody
But a full shell off resto with no shortcuts makes sure it will live for a long time
If your a purist you hate it I get it, but if your into custom stuff and fabbing then projects like these are insanely fun to do.

Hey, looking good...what kind of fare will be offered at your diner? I have a '55 Flying Cloud that I made into a coffee bar. I left the exterior original...one would not know it ( being a coffee bar) until the signage is put up...in keeping the vintage "originality" intact. I used the space from the large front side window as my serving window. So...when I,m tired of doing coffee, I can make it a coach again when I want to ramble.
Your doing a good job, it's going to be very cool. Good luck with your project!

It will be the same as my other vintage food trailers, we usually open at 7 for breakfast then switch the menu at 11...
All comfort foods.... Lobster max n cheese, smoked brisket tacos, wicked stuffed burgers, fries, sandwiches etc.
See I thought about keeping the exterior original but I wanted this thing to POP, and I enjoy building crazy one off projects, so I went for it!!
