Mounting a spare tire on a 68 Caravel

I was wondering what 60s Airstream owners have done to mount their spare tire on the front a-frame behind the propane tanks.

Our 68 Caravel's spare tire was mounted in such a way that it rubbed against the aluminum panel at the front of the trailer.

I'd like to find a way to mount it so that it is isolate from the panel.

Any help would be appreciated.

Couple of options. Colin Hyde makes a hindged rack that mounts the spare under the floor inside the A frame. 4 inch frame means the tire does hang a wee bit below the frame but fact is it isnt below the load bars & brackets. I've had two with the traditional / original vertical mount behind the tanks. Plate steel riveted to the Alum skin & steel hold down plate. Worked well but serious galvanic corrosion problem. I removed them, fixed the mess and re installed with a rubber gasket and stainless steel bolts. Number of years old now with no issues. On the one I'm doing now I'm gonna try welding in a bracket inside the A-frame - behind the tanks allowing the spare to appear original but no contact with the aluminum body. The A frame will support the weight, the bracket only needs to hold the spare securely up right, we'll see? I'm trying to free up the sub floor space inside the A-frame to store a portable free standing grill / fire pit.

I think Airstream made a similar under the A frame spare tire compartment and holder for many years. My son's 69 Globetrotter has one, and my 75 Overlander has one. My previous 66 Trade Wind had a spare tire "hanger" behind the propane tanks as you describe. \

I keep my spare tire in the back of the pickup.

Yes...A vertical support may be the best option for me. It'll live in the truck bed till then.

Here was the vertical, behind the tanks, spare tire "hanger" on my 66 Trade Wind. I wonder if it was a dealer installed option or an aftermarket mount. It looked too involved for a homemade deal.

I removed the thing as it was causing corrosion of the exterior skins. Imagine that. I thought you might like seeing the photo.

That's why I removed mine shortly after buying the trailer. The guys polishing my trailer this week are hoping that they can improve the appearance of the abraded skin.

Hi there: There is a "tray" or support framework that the tire sits in between the A frame rails. This framework is bolted to a crossmember and pivots up into the cavity between the A frame rails. and it then pinned in place. There is a handle that allows us to lift, remove the pin, and then lower the tray with tire to the ground. Then the tire is pulled out of the framework. It's kinda slick.

The mechanism hides the spare tire, it is located toward the front of the trailer. (No spare tires on the rear bumper please to help reduce sway potential). But there is no insulation under the subfloor.

I don't have a photo, sorry.

There was enough room on our 63 Safari so that two bungie cords held it away from the skin. KISS
