Lights on the outside of airstream.

As a newbie to Airstreams we came to Elgin OK to get trailer. My husband had to replace umbilical cord. Hooked it up to truck yesterday and we have no lights . We are totally stumped. Can someone please shed some light for us?

Some one here in a minute will post a picture of the end plug to that cord...showing which port controls what on the Airstream. In your case - running lights. May have to go back and check it out more. good luck! Some time ago, I had just bought a new end plug replacement for our cord and it was not real easy hooking it up and connecting the right wires to the right ports, but one of these rocket scientist will chime in for you shortly.

Might be as simple as cleaning out the truck end of things or wiggling on the plug.

In other words most likely just a bad or dirty connection.

A 70's trailer is not wired the same as a current hook-up. You might have to re-wire according to the posted diagram.

First all connections involved are brand new. Including the week old TV. I cut back the umbilical cord to the bulkhead and installed a female socket. Then used a replacement umbilical cord and added a male end to the other end. I called airstream technical and he walked me thru the conversion.

Make sure you have power coming out of the TV connection first. Use a test light or volt meter if you have it. Turn the head lifts on in the TV with the ignition key on. Check to see of there is any voltage any where on your TV plug.

Head lights not "head lifts"

Did you clean the pins the cord plugs into on the trailer?

I'm having to replace all the lights. I'm hoping to utilize the 4" grommet mounted rounds that are readily available at most truck stops

No not yet. Does the TT have to be connected to the TV ball hitch to complete the ground circuit?

The white wire should be the ground. If that ground is not good you may need to be hooked up, or at least put the safety chain to the TV.

so by new connections you mean new umbilical and new receptacle on the trailer? We had issues with lights and it was easily solved with a small wire brush when I cleaned the pins on the receptacle where it plugs in from the umbilical. Worked like a charm. Also had to clean all the contact points on the trailer lights.

Do not depend on the ball or safety chains for the ground/common side of the circuit.
You can test the lights on the coach using a battery charger. Connect the black lead of the charger to the frame of the coach in a clean shiny spot. Then test each of the remaining terminals on the plug in the side of the coach. Using the red lead of the charger.
Once you know the coach lights work. You can sort out how to match it up to the TV.
