Is a 31' really a 28'?

My '73 31' is 31' overall (from bumper to ball). Would this trailer measure as 28' in later model years? I guess the question is " Are the bumper and tongue included in trailer size today, and if not what year did the change occur?

As far as I know, Airstream has always used the "Bumper to Ball" measurement and still does.

As far as I know, Airstream has always measured and posted bumper to ball, although not always very accurately. Many 25's are much closer to 26 etc.etc. Teh new 23's are like the old 22's, only more accurately depicted.
But, in general, you're right. Measured from bumper to ball.

I was talking with a few of my SOB friends this weekend and that question came up. Some measure just the box and some use the B2B method.

I'm pretty new at this since we just got our AS, but as far as I can determine, our classic 30' and the classic 31' both measure 31' bumper to ball, just a different interior layout. Strange!

Brian.

Our 34 measures 34' 10" B2B, wonder why they didn't call it a 35?

Yes, after owning 2 Airstreams, I have found that 3' of the declared overall length is bumper to ball, meaning that interior living space would be 3' less inside, making a 31', actually 28' of living spaces and that means a 16' is actually 13'!

Not long enough for me, I wish they made a longer one than a 34 or 35, I'd buy one if they did.

If I recall correctly, we measured the actual body of our 25FB to be about 23 feet.

Very helpful thank you. My take-away is that AS is measured b2b, older sob are b2b, newer sob are box only.
