Barbie will be in England next July, so we won't get the boat up there for that meet - but we do plan on being there in the Tin Pickle.

Maybe for a young fellow. However as I aged, I discovered that hotness is not the best search criteria.

A very expensive lesson it was, but thats another story.

Here is my request. Please post your favorite applications for this obviously indispensable tool. This will help me justify this purchase that I am already sure was of the utmost necessity.

Thanks in advance,

Ken

P.S. I have already recognized the need to know the temperature of the white area in the middle of Daisy(my avatar)'s belly.
My thermometer arrived a couple of days ago. How did I live without one all this time?

The white spot on Daisy's Belly is 87.5 degrees.

After I posted above, I read the CT flier and there it was on sale. I just had to have one as, with my years, I think my judgement may be in question!
Now everyone-er-thing will be put through the "HOT" test.
I even used it on my bum knee to show higher temp. from inflamation.

CT=Canadian Tire? If so, what do they call it? I don't see it in their online flyer.

Sale was over on Thur. 15th. Digital temperature reader 57-4554-4. 70% off for $29.99.
Go to the service counter and ask them to honour the sale price. If they still have stock they will give it to you for the sale price.
Good luck

Infrared thermometer, which one?

I think I would need an infrared thermometer too, Is there a model that seems to be the choice? I looked on ebay, and there are close to 3000 choices, so any and all suggestions would be appreciated.

I've always been a fan of Fluke instruments, so I got this one.

Amazon.com: Fluke 62 Mini Infrared Thermometer: Home Improvement

You can however find both less expensive and much more expensive.

'I went with Fluke because after many years of electronic hobbies, I've decided that is a not a good idea to buy unfamiliar test gear.

I think Harbor Freight has an infrared thermometer on sale now for around $20 after a discount coupon is applied. Looks a lot like the one pictured above; but the case is a different color, and it is NOT a Fluke.

One other comment:

While searching around for available options and reading a lot of reviews, I found that some inexpensive ones do not have a laser pointer. To me that would make it a lot more difficult to use properly. You must be very close to what you are measuring to be sure you are on the right spot.

Here is a spec from the Fluke 62. It has a ten to one distance to target diameter ratio. In other words if it is 10 inches from the target, you will be reading the average temperature of a 1 inch diameter circle centered on the laser dot. I don't know if that is typical, but it is something to base a comparison on.

While this one is not professional grade and you must be relatively close to the material being measured, this one is small and can fit between the wheel spokes etc. to get a good reading. I have found it to be accurate enough for tire, brake, hub measuring.

It's size is what sold me...just sits in the console, readily available, for gas station impromptu use.

Yet another use.....

Last winter I had a baffling series of faults in the trailer running and turn lights. I traced it to a breakdown in the insulation between wires in the cable between the trailer and the 7-way connector. The site of the short was hotter than the rest of the cable. This would have been very difficult to trace without the infra-red thermometer.

I check temperatures of all the brake rotors shortly after heading out to watch for any disc hanging up. Also like to observe the difference in surface temperatures of black trucks and white trucks in the playa sun. Airstream Blue (about 140) just a few dozen degrees less than black (170).

Agree with all of above. Hub, brake, tire is critical.

I had a GRAINGER piece that fitted shirt pocket. Recommend this size, but check before washing machine does its best. Worst.

I use my Fluke to check water temperatures in the river when I'm fishing.

So my fish catching prowess is based on science, and partly a fluke.
