How to support the bathroom door / mirror 2012 (27FB)

For the life of me I cant use the right keywords to find this older thread. There was a mod with the gas struts used to support the hinged door mirror in our bathroom. I am tired of holding it open :-) Does anyone have part recommendations I can order? I just added the 8" spring to the door above the fridge, and it works great!!

Gas Struts for Bathroom Cabinet Mirror

I posted about three years ago the modification I made to our 2005 Classic. I ordered the struts from Rockler.com in Medina, MN. Their part number is 32924 for the Lift-O-Mat Gas Springs, Black, Model 100N. I have been pleased with this upgrade, but after a couple years the struts are not holding the mirror completely up as they did at first. This mirror is really heavy and the struts stay compressed most of the time when the cabinet is closed. I will most likely order a new set and replace them in a year or two.

Dennis,

I ordered this part and am getting ready to install it. I am wondering if I should install both of them on the mirror, as opposed to just one as you did. Wondering if you think this would help to avoid replacing them later.

If not, I will be putting the second one that was included on the cabinet above the fridge.

Thanks for your thoughts.

I used piano bench latch instead. When you lift up the mirror, gravity drops the latch to hold it. You then need two hands to release it, one to hold the mirror, the other to release the latch.

I used a Boat Hatch hold-open spring from West Marine. Basically a SS spring that "snaps" rigid when you open the mirror overhead door on 27fb. Works fine - and I did re-enforce the screw mount points on door and side of cabinet.

Ours was like that when we bought it. I thought it was made that way, maybe it's a mod from the PO. Anyway, it's nice and holds the bathroom door open too so it can let the shower dry out.
