How Do "THEY" Do It?

Not sure where in the forums this needs to be, but if this is the wrong place, I feel confident a Moderator will change it.

My question is, how do some (at least one that I know of) commercial members on this forum go back and make a post in a thread with a time stamp before a post that already exists?

Do they have access to do that sort of thing? Why do they do it? Some of the posts that I have seen, seem to be a direct attempt to de-legitimatize , or make trivial a post that has already been made, but is this the reason?

Seems sort of like unfair play to me. Can anyone short of the commercial member making these posts answer these questions?

Or, is this simply a liberty given to a Commercial Account here?

Just a theory here, but in the User CP, under "Edit Options" there's a timezone setting. Having that set wrong could affect the timestamp of your posts, I think.

I don't want to give a specific example because in doing so I would be pointing out the member.

Also, at first I thought it was just something I was doing wrong because I am certainly no computer wizz, but today I noticed after returning to a thread after having viewed it several times, the poster had gone in and made a post that showed up time stamped before the last post he had made.

So, don't think it's something I'm doing wrong.

Sometimes a member's post may be put in moderator quarantine for review. Many times, these are eventually released to the thread. The computer system places the post in its proper chronological position.

That sounds reasonable, but then how could a post address a statement for instance, in another post with a time stamp previous to it?

edit: sorry, mean to say with a time stamp after it.

Maybe the poster went back and edited the post after reading the later entry? Just a theory.

As far as I know, commercial members have no special abilities regarding posting. There is a window of time during which one is able to edit/modify a post and it's possible others will have posted before any corrections/additions are made to the original post. Once that time limit has run out...one must enlist the help of a moderator to change a post.

Don't think so because they are separate posts with earlier time stamps.

Anything is possible, of course, but I admin my own forum, and am a moderator on another vBulletin system (same software as this one), and the type of thing you're describing isn't easily done in the system. I can't explain what you're seeing, but it's not a built-in feature of the software I'm familiar with. There may be a modification that would allow it, but I can't see the value in it, unless it's a control freak admin or something like that - not a power you'd give to certain members.

Also, I assumed the commercial members don't have special powers - they just have the tag beneath their name specifying they are commercial members so we all know who is speaking.

It is good of you to respect confidentiality. Did you know you can send a PRIVATE MESSAGE to a moderator and ask your question? Then you could supply the member's name without it becoming general knowledge or offending anyone.

It could just be a software bug that a member somehow tripped over.

I wonder what would happen if the date and time in the sender's computer was set wrong?

Rumor abatement: Commercial members don't have any special posting or edit rights and there's no easy way to change the time stamp on a post.

If there's a specific issue you need an assist with please send me a PM and I'll try to help.
