The original rivets were bucked rivets, which need access from both sides to install.
An Olympic rivet works like a regular pop rivet, except the exterior head is made thicker so that it can be shaved to look solid. The rivet mandrel (the part that looks like a nail) is made so that it snaps off outside the rivet, so that the center of the head is left full. This needs to be machined off flush with the rivet head so that it looks like the other rivets. Machining the mandrel flush with the head fills the space between the mandrel and head so that it makes it almost indistinguishable from a bucked rivet, if it is done properly.
I installed one last year. I did not have an Olympic shaver tool, so I used a flat file and a grinding tool to shape mine free hand. It turned out ok.
This is the part you need:

This is a link to a video that shows how they do it at Out of Doors Mart (with proper tools):

ps:
some Olympic rivets come with a rubber washer. If you get one with the washer, remove the washer and use sealant. I caulked in the hole before installing and also the whole interior end of the rivet.
