Hope's Log: Day 10 - 05/10/14

Thank you everyone that has expressed an interest in some of the parts that I have removed from the front of the trailer. I promise that I will respond to each of your requests for picts, dimensions, shipping info, costs, etc. I spent time this week setting up a PayPal account to make the transactions safe and secure and plan to figure out how to calculate shipping costs.
(Question: If anyone has done a similar set up to provide our fellow Airstreamers with vintage parts, please let me know the best way to expedite the process...I want to get back to renovating...)

I also spent time during the week drawing what I think the new floor layout will be (Subject to change as we continue discussing our wants and needs). I started with the floor layout from a 2014 23D Flying Cloud in the brochure that I received from the rv dealership then I drew in the approximate dimensions for our 23' Safari Twin. What do you think? Feel free to provide constructive feedback if you see something that I should consider. I like to say, "If I can draw it, I can build it" but the reality is I don't know what changes I may have to make to ensure proper fit and location of items until I actually start the installation phase of this project.

Today happens to be our wedding anniversary and tomorrow Mother's Day, so as much as I had hoped to get "Hope" out of storage and continue the removal of parts, my wife and I agreed that I will focus this weekend on organizing our garage and shed, so that we can systematically inventory and store the parts that you folks may like, otherwise, things will get disorganized quickly!

It's a beautiful day is sunny Arizona, so I best get outside and will provide another update later this weekend! Have a great day!

Just found your thread! I to am starting a 71 Caravel RestoMod and was also thinking of the nautical theme as well. There is a ton of great info here and plenty good and bad experiences. I am really new to this as well but would like to throw my 2 cents in... Sorta feel totally unqualified here but, save some of the bulkheads etc for templates. I have read that there are lots of unique angles and curves that you may want to have a patterns for when building you new interior. I am doing the full Monty with a planned shell off. I have begun removing the interior and have found lots of rot as well as a colony of carpenter ants. "Hope" to be able to share some common experiences. [ATTACH]211622

Hello Bullit,

Welcome and best wishes on your restoration! I look forward to seeing your nautical theme come together. I have been looking at several luxury yacht websites and need to decide how much teakwood I can afford to install due to cost and weight factors. Your suggestion for having patterns is a great idea and I will plan to make them out of the original cabinet angles before I sell or dispose of anything.

Kei

Regards

Hope's Log: Day 12 - 05/12/14

Although I couldn't do much on Hope over the weekend due to my wedding anniversary and Mother's Day, I was able to troubleshoot the problem I discovered with the electrical cable that goes from my Tacoma's 7-way connector to the Airstream's 7-pin connector. The newer 7-way industry standard is not compatible with 1966 - 1980 model years. This causes a problem if the cable between the TV and the TT is not rewired properly. In case any of you experience this problem in the future, I once again found the Air Forum information very helpful and I am grateful to my fellow Airstreamers: http://www.airforums.com/forums/f449...ram-35972.html

I was able to test each pin to correct the connections (Photos of my notes are presented here to show the difference between the correct configuration and the one I had to fix, which required quite a few brain cells to get my head around in order to properly repair the problem).

Also, after my wife went to bed last night, I stayed up to 11:00PM to remove the twin bed section of Hope. I will be inventorying these parts on Saturday and will post the new inventory. I'm also working on getting some of my fellow Airstreamers the information on various parts and hope to figure out the best shipping solution as soon as a UPS shipping specialist replies to my inquiry.

It's going to be a long work week waiting for Saturday...Happy Monday/Tuesday!

I might as well fill in the gap between the Caravel and your Safari. I've been working on a long term restoration and reconfiguration of a 71 Globetrotter. See link below for details.

Watching

We also sold a sailboat...an island packet 380 that we lived aboard for 9 years returning last year. We now live in a house and camp in a 73 safari 23. We plan to do as little as possible and acquire a taste for mid century modern!

Your plans sound great but when I see all the stuff you are selling I wonder if you might need some for patterns. We completely redid a 68 safari in a Japanese style, light and dark wood, Sochi doors, etc. The problem with wood, teak especially, is the added weight. We try to keep ours as light as possible for mileage.

Our older redo is at

I hope you work on the water heater soon so we can watch. That's our next job.
Looking forward to your adventures

Hello Lexxy,

I love your Japanese style with the Koa wood! It looks very inviting and comfortable. I'm looking forward to the day I'm renovating and not removing the old furnishings. I will be posting pictures shortly of today's activities. I have been keeping all the curved aluminum wall parts to ensure I can use them for patterns, but I'm going to design my own cabinets with a light frame and very thin teak fascades to keep the weight to a minimum. Half the fun is engineering this dreamboat in my head!

Hope’s Log - Day 17: 05/17/14

Today I spent most of the morning measuring and weighing the parts that some of my fellow Airstreamers are interested in. (I hope to be able to box up and ship those parts next week, so that they can continue their restorations).

I also went to where Hope is stored during the week to collect the parts that are not needed or wanted by anyone, so I spent the afternoon filling my truck to take the parts to the transfer station in North Phoenix to say goodbye to 43 year old landfill material...

I have added a few picts to show the interior in the daytime and the parts I disposed of.

I found a good deal on Groupon for a pontoon boat rental for my family to enjoy a day on Lake Pleasant, which is a great way to enjoy the water in the desert. So, on Sunday, instead of working on Hope and taking picts of the work, I will be adding a pict or two of this wonderful lake.

My plan next week is to spend 2 out of the 3 days (Memorial Day Weekend) removing the bathroom, the furnace and whatever else I find hidden in the walls. I will inventory all the parts that I believe others may be interested in. I look forward to being able to look from one end to the other with nothing but interior walls and some plumbing jutting out.

Enjoy your week everyone!

Kei

P.S. Thank you to all that have sent me word of encouragement and photos of their Airstreams! They are very much appreciated!

just curious. I noticed you are moving the windows. thats interesting. I didnt know that could be done due to the internal supports but I guess you can cut them like studs. are you manufacturing new windows? Will this leave you with aluminum patches on the outer skin? Also that is a small bed. I mention this because we looked at a travel trailer with a small bed that he'd been trying to sell for ages. maybe they are bunks. it's fine....maybe you are small folks but it limits the resale market. the designing is the fun part.

Hello Lexxy,
We don't intend to move the windows. It may just look like that, because I copied and pasted a 2014 23FB to create a drawing of my concept for our renovation and may have overlooked the placement of the windows.

We just bought the same trailer on Wednesday. I'm going to keep watch of this thread. Ours is already partially gutted and I'm not sure which direction I want to go. Please keep posting pics. Every one helps me get a better idea of what we are dealing with.

Hello Megan,

Congratulations on your recent purchase. I look forward to seeing pictures of your gutted Airstream and future renovation! I spent all day Saturday removing the wardrobe closets and the bathroom and will be posting picts later today after I finish inventorying the parts that I will be selling to our fellow Airstreamers.
