I use 2 sections of PVC pipe connected with a union. Drill a couple of holes and attach flag with parachute cord.

Summary of some past posts on Airforums:

There are inexpensive painter poles available at Lowe's (and possibly other hardware stores) that have a plastic handle on the bottom 1 inch diameter section. Soak the handle in hot water, and it expands and slides right off. They fit neatly into the flag holders...

Just measure the diameter of the outer section of any painter's pole, and it probably can be used. Some have drilled holes into the extendable section and added pins to secure the flags. Search around a bit for more details.

Flags may be obtained from the same big box stores. US flag always goes center so it is the highest in the display. Most flags are packaged with a 'flag etiquette' brochure on proper display. The best ones are nylon with sewn stripes and embroidered stars, preferably made in USA....

For display on a painter's pole, you probably don't want to go above a 2 foot by three foot flag size...

FYI the new search box above, with the blue border, works great. Here are the various threads/posts which have mentioned "flag display."

If it is a flag of the United States of America, aka "Old Glory" then you normally mount it so the star field is nearest the mast/pole, on the top side.

If you mount it so the star field is nearest the mast/pole but on the bottom side i.e. upside down, that is a sign of distress and that you need help.

If you mount it so the star field is opposite the mast/pole, that is also a sign that you need help, but of a different kind.

I have the 3-flag holder that Sandlapper makes. Top quality piece of kit.

1. I purchased 3 of these poles at Lowes - i put a long screwdriver through the hole on the handle and stood on the screwdriver and pulled the handle off. Bonus tip: use the black cap from the 1 lb propane canister for your grill to cover the end of the pole after you remove the handle. Second bonus tip: a couple of wraps of duck tape on the center pole right where the pole passes through the holder will keep it from rattling back and forth. The angled poles on either side don't need anything extra.

2. I purchased 3 sets of these flag attachments from Amazon - they have a set screw that allows you to move the rings to the right spot for different types of flags and the hooks will swivel to keep your flag from wrapping around the pole too much. Not perfect, but a little silicon spray or WD40 keeps them slippy

3. Flags - I purchased my good international and US flags from Amazon - the Annin brand - the 3x5 ft. Nylon SolarGuard Nyl-Glo styles. Good quality, not too heavy, take the wind well. Novelty flags I buy as i see them.

Oh, and US flag goes in the center, and extend the pole one or two twists higher so it is above any other flags.

flag....

Exactly right. Fly the American flag high and proud in a position of honor.
I fly one on my home to remember my shipmates and other military members that are no longer with us, and to honor those who are serving in harm’s way today.
Remember that any member of the military has written a blank check to the US and ‘we the people’ for any amount, up to and including their very own life.

If you are in Canada, it is polite to fly the Maple Leaf at highest point. Otherwise the Stars and Stripes are the highest. This is where the adjustable painter’s poles come in handy.

Another way to mount flag to pole, drill hole at topmost side of pole and second hole spaced down width of flag. Pur. 2 threaded eye bolts to fit holes drilled, and small cleat like used on awnings etc. mount on side maybe 1ft. form bottom, pur. parachute cord or any cord like old clothes line, also 2 snap hooks, tie hooks on line width of flag, then you can lower or unhook flag leaving poles in holder , esp. if you are prone to take down at nite or if raining. I made my pole of 4- 4ft. sections of sched. 80 aluminum tubing, machining solid plugs to fit with collar same outside dia. of tubing left in middle of plug. This gives a 16 ft. pole, won't let flag rub on front of AS. Then made 2 brackets of 3/8 aluminum flat stock, 2 pieced to clamp onto jack post. It was a little work but makes a very sturdy pole that I don't have to take down in wind. I also polished pole for shine, and sand blasted brackets to get matte finish plus covers up any scratches or marks from fabrication. I did this in 1968 still nice pole also had to make new brackets as tongue jack larger dia. of manual original jack replaced w/power jack. Only special tools was lathe to turn plugs, hole saw for brackets drill and tap for set screws to clamp together and have band saw but can cut by hand. I only fly US flag and some times nascar [junior] flag below that only req. 1 more snap hook that stays tied onto cord. I'm a vet and fly us flag every day with this setup.
