FL renovation/big family/re-gifted Airstream!

Hello Airstream friends,

We have outgrown our 2009 30' Classic & are going to put it back on the market ASAP. Last week, we really tried to like/buy a "SOB" at a dealership to fit our family of 10 & the salesman laughed at my husband & I saying "you'll never find anything nearly as nice as your Airstream!" We agreed.

We were contemplating gutting & completely renovating a 34' with 2 enormously long, retractable bunk beds- sleep 4 on top & 4 day beds below w/ collapsible tables to make a huge multi use space. However as our home resembles that in the movie "The Money Pit," we were trying to avoid more renovation.

Yesterday, I called my cousin who recently inherited my Aunt & Uncle's ?80s Excella. I told her of our interest & SHE GAVE IT TO ME! Wow! A free Airstream is a free Airstream! Hooray!

Tomorrow I should receive pics as they said it needed a lot of work but uncertain how much. We pick it up in Thanksgiving in Pittsburgh & we live in Naples, FL. We are so busy that we will need to have someone do the renovation... Any thoughts? I am google searching for AS renovation companies in FL/ East Coast without much luck.

Thank you!

I can't help you with renovation resources but I suggest you message Pizzachop (Ron) about space utilization for large a large family. He's a master at packing them into an Airstream.

I second contacting Pizzachop, as well as Skatero.
They both have done excellent jobs of renovating Airstreams into bunkhouses for extremely large families.

We're close to Pittsburgh and always enjoy a houseful at Thanksgiving. It's cool that you bring a houseful with you. We hope you enjoy your holiday and your "new" project. You may want to contact Frank's Trailer Works in Maryland. You may be able to link up a drop off on your trip home?

We are also a family of ten. We have seven kids and their grandma living with us. We had a 29' Excella which we outfitted to sleep ten with triple bunks on each side in the back (the middle ones hinged up and disappeared by day so the lower ones could serve as seating, and an additional folding bunk in between the two sets of triples. Then in front we put in J-shaped sofa seating which turned into a queen and a pullout single for grandma. Our kids got bigger and we started to want more room, so we bought a 32' excella and completely rebuilt and customized it. We put in all full-length bunks since our youngest is 11 and all are approaching adult size-- our oldest is 17. We put in quad bunks in the back with an unfolding bunk in between, a set of single bunks in the hallways area across from the bathroom, and a nine-foot sofa which turns into a queen and a single for grandma and guests, and also serves as dining space as it is flanked by two disappearing foldout tables. They give us 8 feet of dining table and we have four storage ottomans which store all of our shoes as well as serving as chairs for the other side of the tables. We put in a front permanent bed for the two of us. There is storage under everything, and each child has his own storage bin. We did all of the design and customizing ourselves. Come see it anytime. We technically sleep twelve, and the table is comfortable for ten but can squeeze in twelve if we really scrunch. It works absolutely perfectly for us. You can see our customization thread under 1986 Excella.

Some of the photos above were taken during the build, so you can see the paper on the floor etc. Here are some photos of it from recent trips:

I've seen Katie and Rob's trailer in person. It's so spacious looking it's hard to believe it sleeps that many. They have done a fabulous job. A bit of luxury too - dishwasher and built in vac system. Beautiful!

I missed Skatiero's trailer at Open House at the Canopener rally, but I did walk through Pizzachop's trailer. Rack 'em and stack 'em.

Hello! Thank you for all of the wonderful assistance. We love to hear about other big families & we would love to see one especially fashioned for 10!
My first step would be to see what sort of condition it is in & what it needs to travel from Cabot, PA to FL. My husband is driving up over Thanksgiving but it would be helpful if an expert on sedentary airstream a came & pointed out what it needed to be road worthy. Is there a particular place in the forum which requests evaluation help?

Yes, there should be a listing of voluntary inspectors. I have never used this service. Maybe someone else can elaborate. Basically another Forums member who lives near the trailer goes and does an inspection and gives you a report of its condition and needs.
