Shooting Craps and Parts Warranty: taking the Odds
I Play the 'Free Odds', when shooting Craps in a Las Vegas Casino. That is your extended warranty.
I used my Air Conditioning for a couple weeks in Las Vegas when it was 110 to 120 outside. Usually we would not go into an area with excessive heat, but needed to be there one July. Had I added up the hours we use the AC... probably very little in two years.
I use the refrigerator all the time while on the road. There is very little to go wrong with one. The parts are simple and durable... if you make it past the original warranty period!
In two years we have used the AC for 12 days out of a possible 730 days. Having the insurance would not be a good fit for me.
You live in a more humid area and if you camp where power is available... that is a different story. I would like to believe that those notices that Dometic sends out would probably tell me that it is to their advantage, like the Casino, to insure your units AFTER the factory warranty. If they have the edge, they will take your 'insurance wager'.
Our 2006 refrigerator had a coil weld break and the ammonia leaked out, the first year of traveling. It was replaced by warranty, but labor was at our cost. I replaced the entire refrigerator and kept the warranty parts as... spares. Never had another issue during the 8 years we owned it.
Our 2014 International AC and Refrigerator have performed well.
Warranties are playing at a Craps Table. Dometic supplies the table, dice, chips and dealers. What are the Odds of needing it? Do you 'play often'?
Up to this point... we are money ahead by not having an extended warranty. For companies... this is the easy money.
