Electric Buck Riveting?
Has anyone used an electric buck rivet gun? We are doing all work off the grid with either battery power or generator power and of course a dwindling budget as projects go. Unexpectedly, we will have to remove and replace the steel frame-to-shell tie-ins front and back and a compressor, lines, rivet gun add up to a lot. There is an attachment for a cordless drill that can buck up to 3/16 aluminum rivets. For future shell repair etc. it'd be nice to have. Any personal experience? Heres the link: http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/3615845...&ul_noapp=true

That gizmo for sale on Ebay looks like some kind of adapter that allows you to install pop rivets, not bucked rivets. The giveaway is the different sized tips for the rivet mandrels.
If you have the $80 for a riveting attachment gizmo, then you aren't far from what it would cost to get set up for a minimal buck riveting outfit. You can run your riveter off of a small pancake style compressor (I bought a refurbed one for $90), and a used rivet gun can be had from ebay, etc., for a reasonable price.
good luck!

The link looks like it is for a 'blind' riveter, not for buck rivets. This is similar to a hand rivet gun, but for doing a lot of blind rivets.

Ah, I see. Sorry, my quick look let me see what I wanted to see. I guess I'll have to scrape together more $.
Thanks.

You can also use a Nitrogen Tank to power the rivet gun, but that setup may cost more then a small compressor

Try CO-2 tanks. It's a liquid in the tank and exits as a gas. I use them for airing up and carry a small CO-2 tank in the van all the time.
Look at Powertank's offerings. Much higher flow rates than small compressors.

Buck rivets can be set with a hammer, using a heavy tool held against the rivet head and striking them on the butt end. This is backwards to the way it's done with a pneumatic rivet gun. The tool for the head has to be machined to fit the head of the rivet so it doesn't flatten it.
Old aircraft mechanics used to do it this way in the field.
I don't know if the tools for this are available nowadays or not, but I have seen it done.

I've done a bunch of hand setting rivets with leather so concept make sense. Bonus is no need for a gym
I hadn't thought of CO2 tanks. how long would a tank last? hmm...

My large 15lb. PowerTank will completely fill 10 large RV tires (that's the 22.5" size on the large bus-type rigs) with no problem to 120PSI.

Hey Lew,
Thinking of the environment, we should try to limit use of CO2. Oh but wait, now that you guys have Donald there is no global warming!
