Dometic 2801 refridgerator

Just purchased 89 excella 32' trailer. Strong ammonia smell coming from fridge when door is opened. I understand that this unit is not made now. Can someone tell me what my options would be as to repairing versus replacing with a different refridgerator?

"Cooling units" are available to repair some makes and models of RV refrigerators, they are not cheap, but cheaper than a new refer.

I know there are some available for NorCold, I saw them on eBay when I was wondering if the one I had just bought in a trailer worked.

Call these guys Trailer & RV Refrigeration - Sales and Service Gas RV Refrigerators - They are located in Tucson AZ. A friend had them rebuild his refer (in a SOB and it could not be removed). These folks actually rebuild the cooling units and ship them out to various RV repair centers.

Here's one I have done business with, and found them well-price and responsive:

RV Cooling Unit Warehouse in Memphis TN

Here's two versions of the one for your refer: Search Results - RV Cooling Unit Warehouse They make the usual rebuilt ones, and also a heavy duty brand new one.

Look at the videos they have posted on their site. You might be surprised how simple it is to replace the 'cooling unit'.

ps: they refund you $100 once you return the original core back to them.
