Crunch goes the '53 Flying Cloud...

I bought a '53 Flying Cloud this spring with the intent of spending time bringing it up to snuff and reselling it. I finally got started on it a couple of weeks ago, and have been working diligently on bringing it back to life. I stripped and repainted the tongue and bumper, installed a new tongue coupler and tongue jack, completely replaced the propane system on the tongue back to the original copper under the belly (which is still good), replaced the missing Bargman #2 taillights with 7" round LEDs (still keeping a vintage look). It has new tires and chrome wheels installed. I was about to move on to the interior, and the last big exterior issue was a new 12v pigtail and brake wiring.

I took it to my auto-electric guy to have the wiring to the brakes re-run, and to install a new Bargman 7-pin round connector and pigtail. He does absolutely beautiful work, and is fastidious in his detail. He called me yesterday morning and told me it was ready to pick up. He called me ten minutes later and told me that I had to come out to his shop immediately, huge concern in his voice. I asked why, and he told me he'd run the 13 panel front cap into the bottom of his raised garage door pulling it out and he'd smashed it in. He was just sick about it as he appreciates these trailers as much as we do...

Here's the result. <sigh> Except for the ever-present bumper dents on it (found on nearly ALL early Flying Clouds) it had been a nearly pristine 13 panel Flying Cloud...

We have calls in to his insurance company, and I sent 15 photos to Steve Oldani, service manager at Ace Fogdall in Cedar Falls, IA for a repair estimate. I suppose that the fight to value it properly will commence shortly...

So much for selling it yet this summer...

Roger

LED taillights

BTW, here is a photo of the Grote LED 7" taillights on the back of the Flying Cloud... I think they fit very nicely!

Roger, it's so beautiful. . .and we are so sorry to hear about the accident. To have found one in such good condition and see this must make you sick. Good luck on your estimates and repair. Please keep us posted. ~G

Sorry to hear about your misfortune Roger, looks like it is a nice unit. The one good thing is the 13 panel segments are not compound curves and should be fairly easy to duplicate and replace. Hope it works out well and is a brief diversion.

Ace Fogdall did a nice job on the replacement of our segments.

Not sure trailer wasn't outside without a segment during some rain though. Pillow water stains suggest it was. Overlooked it at the time because Ace is a AS dealer with a lot of years, and Jim Fogdall is a very nice, knowledgeable guy.

Wasn't thrilled with the LP service work - my new LP tanks came with the old valves, which I didn't find until this year.

Hi John! It's been an incredibly busy summer... trust me... you don't really want to hear about it! I may bring the Scamp down this year... they've got our street all torn up in front of the house for blocks. I don't think I can get the Behemoth out! We haven't had it out yet once this summer... and I don't know if our street will be useable by Labor Day this year... we'll definately come over to see you guys for one of the days in any event... I'm not sure I'm willing to bring the '53 tho... you know how much I enjoy my A/C!

Where Is Milan?

Hi John, Milan Is 8 Miles South Of The Mississippi River In The Quad Cities. Just South Of Rock Island Across The Rock River. Where Is The Vintage Mc Event Held In Davenport And When Will You Be There? If I'm Not Back At Nasa/johnson Space Center By Then I'd Like To Come Over And Meet You. Roger, Is Going To Come By My Place Sometime After Mid Month And Look Over My Trailer And Hopefully Point Me In The Right Direction As To What I Am Doing To It. Maybe I Can Get Your Thoughts Too! Thanks, Ed
