Coupler wear: what to do?

I had a ball with wear so I had it relaced and on my first pull, twenty minutes at the most, the ball started show wear, it is a (curt).

So I cleaned out my coupler, which I had done before I re greased the coupler. I noticed some roughness in the coupler so I photographed it.
It looks like the chrome and some brass from the old ball actually accumulated in the the roof of the coupler.

Is there any way to re polish the coupler and or do I just replace it.

Allan.

Replace the coupler lock parts.

They are readily available.

What do you use to lubricate the ball? Have you tried to take a hitch ball that is hot attached and put it the coupler to see how it fits and rotates?

Coupler wear what to do

Hi,
I use white lithium grease. I use to use Reese Ball Lube, the stuff in the little bottle, that was excellent lube. Obviously the lithium failed. My service center suggested using a light oil if any lube at all. I have a spray on LOCKTITE dry lube.

I researched a lube called Green Grease. I think what caused the problem is that I did not clean the coupler before a long haul last year. I am in the desert north of Phoenix and I am sure the exposed greased coupler picked
up some serious sand and dust during storage.

I replaced the worn ball, and the fit is good.

I am going to try to polish the coupler just enough to take out the
rough spots.

Allan

allenrd.... The Reese lube has be hard to find. West Marine sells Star Brite PTEF Trailer Hitch Lubricant for $10.99 for 4 oz. The container is similar to the Reese container.
