Smile Cleaning filters in ducted air system?

We're currently in LasVegas (101 degrees today) and our AC has not shut off for days. The two AC filters in the ceiling need to be cleaned but how. I tried pulling them down with my fingernails but to no avail. How do you remove & clean these things?

I pulled my by the ends with fingernails. They pull off hard. Just little strips of foam for filters. It was in the 90's where we were last week, the air hardly ever shut off.

I carry a few replacements. Clean and ready to install. A pair, in other words, so that cleaning isn't hurried.

One end of the grill has a little recess in it. A medium size flat blade screwdriver and a little twist will pop it off. It's a shame they couldn't come up with a more effective filter.

Just noted this.
Where did you find replacement air filters?

Get a “bone tool” to pry the vent off, available at hardware stores and on line, will not scratch the surface....

I use a set of auto trim removal tools to get the vent off. Also works well for removing the ductless AC vents in a way that won’t break the clips or mark up the aluminum

Am I missing something as my A/C vent covers are held on by screws?
