Can I stand on roof to check for leak???

I have a 25 FB International and during raining periods I have water leaking from around my bedroom vent fans. I want to get on top to take a look and caulk if necessary.

Try to stay on the seams. We all need to get up there now and then.

One day I will take pics... I have non skid on roof then Place wood planks to straddle the "rib line rivets" and ribs, now to stern direction. Add as many board as necessary to support. NEVER step between ribs....unless you have boards to spread your weight.

I use 2x8 pine board planking....

Now, if you weigh as much as Tinkerbell, just step on ribs without planking.

Airstream, many years ago, had 30 employees standing on the roof of a 30 trailer, without any damage or water leaks.

Walking slowly on the roof hurts nothing, just don't jump up and down.

I have personal knowledge, stay away from the end caps.

I've watched average sized men walk on mine at the AS dealer. They just walk on the ribs, Me, I'm too chicken. I like cwf's suggestion though. Besides not walking between the ribs, don't walk or even lean on the end caps either.

Mine holds up my 270 lbs without an issue. Not wise to stand on a wet roof unless it is coated. That would be a great way to end up in the ER.

Remove all old caulk and re caulk. If the vent is plastic it will eventually crack if it has not already. Caulk all seams and screw heads.

On a factory tour, we were told to access the roof from the awning side. The awning will catch you if you misstep.

And at AS factory service the tech ALWAYS uses a safety harness when working on the roof. Better safe than sorry!

Slipping/falling from the roof looks quite possible to me. Only work I have done there is to install a Maxx-Air vent on the fan between the aft solar panels and was able to work on ladders from either side.

Can I stand on roof to check for leak???

I have never seen the need to walk on the roof, I usually sit on my can or up on my knees to accomplish my rooftop tasks.

If I am working on the a/c, I climb up next to the a /c, if I am working on the vents, I climb up by the vents...

Walking on the roof is an unnecessary risk.

I used a piece of plywood about 18 inches wide and 6 feet long. It is long enough to span a number of ribs and distributes the weight. I recently re-caulked my roof this way with no problems. The job is done and I don’t look forward to another trip to the roof.

Last week I had a roofer quote on reshingling my roof. He mentioned to me that the Workplace Safety Board requires roofers (as well as people working on the roofs of RV's) to wear a safety harness; failure to do so voids their insurance. This coupled with a thread in the motor-home section of an airstreamer who fell off the roof of his motor-home and endured compound fractures tells me that safety is most important.

In answer to your question - look for a place under a tree or near a pole to which you can attach the harness. The harness works like a car belt and catches you if you slip.

Personally, I don't crawl up on any roof any more.

My Airstream has awnings on both sides so it is pretty hard to fall off. I would not want to be on one without the awnings. As far a a harness goes that seems a bit over kill.
