Cabinet Door Latch Locked in Closed Position

We have a 2012 16' Bambi Sport travel trailer. A cabinet door latch seems to be in a locked position and will not allow the door to close properly. The cabinet door will not engage the latch... it seems to be in a closed position. How do I open the latch to an open position so it works properly again and how do I avoid it happening in the first place? Something must have occurred to cause it to be in this condition. Thanks for any assistance.

Use a screwdriver or something similar to pry it open. Unfortunately a common problem.

Typical of the plastic latches Airstream uses. If it breaks, they install another one. No improvement to the problem.

Many of sun have switched to these brass catches:

Like Al says, it's not unusual for the latch to settle in the wrong position. Open another cabinet with that type of latch, look at how the latch is when it is normally open, then use a small screwdriver/pocketknife and flip the latch to the correct position.

Easy one!

This happens from time to time, usually because you push to close on a spot far away from the latch. Make it a habit to close any door using these latches fairly close to the latch itself.

Take a screwdriver and put the blade against the inside of the closed part of the latch through the area remaining open. Gently but firmly use the screwdriver as a lever to pop open the closed portion of the latch. Be careful to do it gently because the portion of plastic in the latch casing that you're using as a fulcrum can distort pretty easily (but this won't affect the functioning of the latch.) That's it!

If it happens to the same latch a lot, even though you're now in the habit of pushing the door closed fairly close to the latch, consider replacing the latch.
