Are we crazy?

We have an elderly acquaintance who owns an AS, and also his parents 60's overlander. We have inquired about it many times and were rebuffed; now he has to move and must sell it.

It has been sitting in the field for about 25 years. The good part: one owner, and I believe all original. The bad part: FULL of mice to the point that you can't breath inside for the ammonia smell. It has also been leaking not just from windows, but broken vents.

Are we crazy to buy this? We had mice in our Excella when we bought it but nothing like this.

For some reason, I can't get more than one image to upload at a time.

Since you asked.
Without knowing or seeing the rest of the trailer, it would be hard to put a value on it.
However if you can pick it up for a couple grand. Then have thousands more $ and many months available to restore or renovate to your liking.
Go for it.
If it is to sentimental for them to be reasonable on price. then pass.

Are you likely to get the smell out of this? I worry about that and disease. (I can't help that part, I work at a hospital).

About par for the course, just wear breathing apparatus not just a dust mask, my wife did some research on the mouse poop, it can get you really sick, just can't remember what it can cause.

We had lot's of mouse residue in our Safari when we first got it,I did not think that Diane would ever stay in it, now she can lounge comfortably in our renewed trailer

The smell is in the insulation and in the wood, once we used the existing wood pieces as patterns to cut new, we put all the old stuff in a utility trailer to take to the dump and you could smell that stench any time we would get near the dump trailer

The Hantavirus is associated with contact of rodent urine, saliva and feces. Some strains of Hantavirus can cause potentially fatal diseases (HFRS) and (HPS) in some humans. Be safe, respiratory protection is a must.

I would pass. You would need a complete gut down to the outside skin to remove all of the mice infested area. There are Airstream's out there that would be far less work and money. Remember it is not the cost you pay for it, even if they gave it you. It's the cost to bring it back that counts. Good luck.

The answer depends on intangibles that only you can answer.

1. How much do you want this model trailer?

2. How much do you want this particular trailer? (Sentimental value?)

There is no question that the floor is rotten and you are looking at a full shell-off restoration. If you do it yourself it will probably take $10-20,000 in materials and months (if not years) of your time. By the time you have gotten rid of all the rotten wood and insulation I expect the smell and disease potential will be gone.

It might be worth it if you want that particular trailer.

But for the kind of money it will take just for materials, you can probably buy the same model trailer in decent serviceable condition--without any investment of your own labor.

Thanks everyone for the input. I really like the layout of the trailer, but as I already have an Excella 500 I certainly don't need this.

It's such a shame.
