AC Repair Question

We have a relatively new AC on our 72 Sovereign that isn't blowing particularly cold air. We did not purchase the AC, but bought the Airstream from someone who did. The question is, do we take it to an RV place to check it, or do we call a regular AC repair place? Do these units need occasional Freon?

They are a sealed unit, and should never need refrigerant unless a leak develops, and often by that time it is more effective to replace the unit, rather than trying to repair it.

It is hard to say the best place to seek repairs. Some RV places, especially in the south like your location have a lot of experience with AC work, and are probably capable of evaluation of your unit. And some AC repair places would also have the experience needed and the willingness to look at it. The roof top units are very similar in design and operation to a large window unit, just harder to access.

I'd recommend taking it to an RV place. The home AC guys may be able to figure it out because an AC is an AC, but the RV guys should have more familiarity with the particular unit, and the possible pitfalls of their installation. If it boils down to needing a replacement, unless you do it yourself, you will probably end up at the RV place anyway.

A common problem is the starting capacitor fails. If you turn on the unit on a hot day and don't hear the compressor kick on, that is likely the trouble.

You can replace the capacitor yourself if you are willing to get on the roof and pull the cover off the AC unit.

If the freon has leaked out, you are probably out of luck. The old Armstrong units had a valve for recharging but new units usually don't. Chances are that tracking down and repairing any leaks will not be cost effective, and buying a new AC unit will be the way to go.
