A&E 8500 awning up down lever came lose

I went to roll up my awning a couple of days ago and found that the lever was not tight or gripping on rod that goes inside awning tube that is spring loaded to take awning up and down. It appears what ever keeps this lever tight must have fallen off. I was able to grap rod with vise grips and get to release tension but now I was told that a bolt fell our. The rod is hollow aluminum and does not appear to be threaded. I have tried # 10 size bolts , too small. I got #12 bolts and they appeared to be threading up but when I looked a second time the bolt was just bending hollow rod our. Help? How can I re attach up- down lever???
