Question 30 foot Airstream Classic

I am a new member and am looking for some advice on a 30 ft classic . It's a 2007 and the seller wants $5,900 for it. It has damage on two panels but not too bad and he says it has some water damage. My wife looked at it this afternoon and she liked what she saw. I will go inspect it tomorrow morning. The carpet will need replacing and the sofa will need to be redone and that's all i can see in the photos. What do I need to ask tomorrow and does this deal sound too good to be true. He has no paperwork but has a clean title and said his father bought this for him at an auction in Utah and was pulled to Austin Texas. I would appreciate any help. Thank you

$5900 sounds really low for a 2007 even with a salvage title. Is there major structural damage?

It sounds really low to me too. But hey, the trailer does exist. That is the price I would expect to see on a mid 70's model that is decent, but needed some work.
I would look at it very close. You might try finding someone on the forum close by that would help you inspect.

Send us pictures tomorrow. Take a bunch of the damaged and wet areas. It sounds WAAAAAY low, unless something is really wrong.

How would I look for structural damage or any major repairs that need to be done and if anyone knows of a person that could help me inspect around Austin Texas that would be great. Also thank you guys for responding so quickly.

First, the price is scary low!!! Prospective buyer beware!!!

I'd really try to get someone who is knowledgeable about Airstreams/RVs/trailer repair (as in utility trailers, over the road trailers, anything) to make a somewhat educated estimate as to what lies ahead. Sight down the sides, roof line (get a tall ladder), along the belly, etc. Do the sides look straight? Look at all the rivet lines, look at the front and rear end caps where they join the sides, etc.

I'd also wonder about the title, liens, and other legal aspects. Either the trailer has more damage than is evident or something similar is wrong in my opinion. Otherwise, why would the owner take such a bath on selling it at this price. Here's what the NADA Guide Book says for a 2007 30' Classic with none of the option boxes checked:

Average Retail: $39,580
Low Retail: $32,850

I have spent 40+ years in aviation. I have bought and sold airplanes since I was 16. I could not afford to buy a flying airplane so I would buy wrecks and rebuild them. This led to one on one dealings with insurance company's. At 60% of the hulls insured value the insurance company will TOTAL OUT the aircraft. This does not mean the plane can't be rebuilt just not economical for the insurance co. at the insured hull coverage. The insurance may (most of the time they don't)make a notation in the airframe log book regarding damage. I have bought 2 or 3 with notations over the years
Motor vehicles, trailers, travel trailers, basically anything with a title issued from the state when involved in an accident that exceeds the economical repair of the hull will total out the vehicle, Then insurance notify's the state and the state issues a rebuilt or rebuildable title.
The state of California pulls the title on a vehicle if it is stolen, even if the vehicle is recovered with minor or no damage.
Before the deal is made Make sure it has a clear title.

From the pictures it looks like a flood damaged unit. LOTS of damage. It's on CL Austin.

I looked up the ad and it looks legit.

That trailer can be fixed but it will take some work on your part and probably some farmed out work and quite a bit of money.

If there is water damage then expect the insulation behind the walls to be nasty and probably growing things along with the upholstery will need to be redone. I would try to get the story on the trailer.

The interior work could be done by you if your up for a project. The exterior should be done by a professional.

If I was closer to the area I would buy it in a minute, fix it and use it but I like Airstream projects.

Well fellas thank all of you for your helpful advice. I went to look at that 30 ft classic and it was a REAL big project. It appears to have been wrecked or flooded like Splitrock suggested. The water line was high on the furniture and a lll the carpet was molded. The front end cap and the back end cap looked as if somebody had tried to install but it was not a professional job. I found a person who could help me out with the inspection but the seller din't want to wait so I walked away from his deal. Anyway thanks again for all the advice from all you guys and we will keep on looking since my wife is dead set on an airstream.

Good move walking away - there'll be another. A real estate agent told me once that everyone gets the house they're destined for...I think it's true of Airstreams too. I generally don't like resorting to fate but I have to admit for both our house and our Airstream it worked out perfectly.

For comparison on the price (moot point, I know): We paid $15K for a 1995 30' trailer last year.

Barber,
Good move!
My wife was dead set on an airstream about 10 years ago. We traveled 10's of thousand of miles looking at prospective airstreams, all needed new frames and floor, and the asking price was very high.
At one point I thought if I didn't buy her a airstream we were headed for divorce.
Be patient, Study all the ins and outs of airstreams on this forum. Then you will know when you find the one you want, or you find the one at a price you can put time and money to make the airstream of your dreams.
One good thing about buying a fixer upper you know what you have when you get through. You will not be guessing IF that 30 year old trailer will make that 2000 mile trip.
good luck

Used Airstreams seem to fit two categories: pre-loved and pre-destroyed.

The Classic - destroyed.
The Excella - loved!
