30 AMP Cords Replacement

I didn't realize until a recent untoward theft of my 30 amp cord that there are two types of 30 amp plug on the trailer side. The local WalMart sold (and courteously refunded me a cord that would plug in nicely to the camp outlet, but wouldn't fit into the plug on my Airstream.

The one WalMart sells has a plug that looks a bit like a regular 15 amp extension cords - two flat prongs at opposing 45 degree angles / \ and centered below them an inverted "u" prong. Airstream uses two flat prongs and the third one is mostly flat with a bend on one side - the prongs are farther apart and angled differently on the airstream power cord too. The next morning after CW opened I got a new cord that looks to be significantly better quality that the WM one.

I've never seen an adapter from one style to the other - and frankly never thought about the existance of more than one format. Hm... better go check the Honda Generators and see what I've got there.

So what's the deal and what RV uses these Walmart cords.

Pretty cold behavior wasn't it? I was parked at an "electric only" spot in Western Branch campgrounds (Portage County, Ohio) where the temperatures went into the 30's at night - and ran out of water plus had gray beginning to back up into my shower (sensors are malfunctioning too) so a 10 minute trip to the dumpsite for a drain and refill - who'd throw the mats, chocks, and power cord into the truck or trailer for something like that? Karen (PrudencePB) thinks they thought we'd pulled off permanently and left our stuff behind. They certainly didn't ask any of the neighboring campers. I hope they were homeless and can sell the stuff for food for their kids. If they did it just because "finders keepers" well then I hope they all develop a bad case of diarrhea for a month or so.

From now on I will lock up everything if there isn't someone I know and trust actively guarding the campsite. Going to be locking the darned cord down around the spokes of a wheel or the bumper tiedown that I don't have yet. Guess it didn't become standard on the bumper until 2013. If you're at a strange campground beware.... Just lucky I didn't have the chairs or volcano cooker out.

BTW - My sister wanted to check in to a hotel for the night, but I realized we could run a 15 amp cord out through the fantastic fan and use the Dyson Hot-Cold. Worked beautifully. Thankfully the new Fantastics come with a snap out screen rather than the old ones with six or eight screws.

Are the Airstream ones truly flat? Or perhaps slightly curved?

Here's a photo of a Marinco "ParkPower" cord that mates with Marinco inlets. It has the bend on one pin that you describe, but each of them is curved.

Yep... that's the right one - and they are slightly curved. The one they had at WalMart was in the RV section - so I wondered why it's plug was different.

I think AL-K4GLU made a good guess. The one you bought at Wal-Mart was most likely a 30A RV extension cord. Its end probably had the same receptacle pattern as the 30A receptacle on the campground pedestal.

Paula get a 15 amp male to 30 amp twist lock adapter that will attach to your EB and plug into regular ext cord. Takes minimal space and will prevent using vent to run extension. I have on except 50 amp for our a/s and it works great when I don't need full power like cooling refrigerator before a trip.

Al - K4GLU, in a previous post said it was an extension cord.

And that's exactly what it is. I've used it before in situations where the shore power is on the opposite side of where it should be.

I am saddened to hear that someone at a campground would do that. I have done the very same thing on many occasions. When I go to dump my tanks at the campground, I usually leave all of my outside stuff in place. I will be thinking twice about that now.

The basic plug on the Airstream is a NEMA L5-30 twist lock. If you buy one at a electric supply you can make your own adapters up. They won't have the threaded ring (the black ring in the photos above) that retains the cord. The style with the ring are commonly seen on boats that have a shore power connection.

They added this handy dandy little thing to the bumper - but it's not on my 2012 - what a good idea. If I go to the mother ship any time this winter I might have it added to mine

Yep. The one I found at Camping World is black, but otherwise identical. So if anyone sees a putty/silver colored one on some ratty old camper and the people who have it brag about "finding it" for free... please beat them up for me. If that's not your style Dog poo on their step will do nicely. And if you don't have a dog...
