2016 Flying Cloud quality issues

We have a 2016 27FB, and my husband is so frustrated. First is was the water leaks, they had not tightened several fittings. Then the intermittent heat which we think the dealer has fixed, at least it worked for 2 days this past weekend. But now it is the hinge to the door, the top hinge has a gap I can slide a credt card in, and when he tried to tighten it, it felt stripped. He took off part of the interior trim, and there is no nut to be seen on the hinge. Back to the dealer again, which is darn inconvenient as it is an hour away. How can airstream have such terrible quality? These are things I' d expect with a $15000 trailer, but not this. We have the phone number to the national service mgr, he gets a call tomorrow. Are we the only ones having these issues?

We're sorry that you are having these issues, but hang in there and it will ultimately be worth the effort.

Airstreams are basically hand made and, as such, things can often fall through the cracks. We have had three Airstream, two new and one used. All had problems, a few serious, but mostly minor. We were able to correct most ourselves. Others were corrected at Jackson Center.

This being said, we now have almost 1,800 nights/150,000 miles with our Aistreams, and have never had so much fun doing anything in our lives.

Look at the forum, lots of quality problems. There may not be better mass brands but many people end up frustrated. These things just do njot have much QC.

Sorry to hear this, but it will get squared away and these issues will soon be a distant view in your rear view mirror.

Issues with new RVs seem to be basically luck of the draw. Our 2016 Intl. Serenity was almost perfect. We had just a few very, very minor adjustments to be made.

Your inconveniences will be put behind you and you can enjoy moving forward.

Spotty, ours has been near perfect. Once your work out the bugs and learn the extra periodic maintenance requirements, especially prevention/repair of water leaks and corrosion, you'll love the experience as most of us do.

Poor assembly quality is typical of the industry. SeOur good friend just took his new highly-rated and expensive Tiffin motorhome back to the factory for 64 repair items, where he learned they don't do assembly quality control, they expect every worker to do their job. Good theory to speed things along.

Hang in there, get the bugs out, take care of it, things will get much better.

The Airstream factory folks were so proud of their shody work in our 2015 23D International Serenity they even left the brand name "Airstream" off the backside above the window. Neither factory quality control nor the non-existent dealership PDI folks noticed this omission let alone the torn/unoperative view window shade, improperly installed shower and toilet, torn flooring, lack of grease in one wheel bearing that was scored in less than 2,000 miles with other items that told me no PDI was done. Even the wash job was poorly done.

It has taken nearly two years to get out 2014 Classic the way we want it, learning as we go. We were able to consolidate our three trips of modification experience on the Classic into one trip for the 23D.

We used a third party (A&P Vintage Trailer Works in Paradise, TX who can also do Airstream warranty work) to get the repairs and modifications done using better than factory parts so the issues won't reappear. My experience with the dealer network has not been good.

Once the user performers the quality control repairs on their trailer (just like the user doing QC for Microsoft Software), one gets down to the routine maintenance which is not so maddening.

Having serous issues with a new expensive RV is very frustrating to say the least. I've been there & was very pissed off when my brand new Tuscany 40 ft diesel motor home had a toilet that would not hold water, much more so when I retracted the kitchen slide wall & it malfunctioned causing the cabinets to be dislodged from the wall itself. Upset yes, frustrated yes, discouraged no. I bought & paid for this damn thing with my hard earned money & decided to make the manufacturer responseable. Being on a cross county trip we diverted to Elkhart, Indiana to the factory for repairs. I was determined that if I dident get satisfaction I would paint lemons all over the MH & go to every major RV show across the US until the day I died. The factory service center welcomed me with open arms, rebuilt the kitchen, replaced the toilet and a bunch of minor issues. No I never made that threat as I never had to.
The point here is go to Jackson Center they will fix it and fix it right. Dealers are just movers of products they don't build them & unfortunately most don't even know how to fix them.
It will get better, take that from someone who's been there.

We have worked Jackson Center into our travels for the purpose of seating upgrade, among other things. They know what they're doing and have the parts at hand to get the job done, often in a day or two while they move your Airstream out to their free full-hookup sites to use each night you are there.

We're retired. Not as easy for working people but if you can, it's a good chance you will have everything fixed in one short stop.

Medjrd, Everyone,
My wife and I are planning on retiring in a year or so and have decided we would buy a new Classic. We have even ordered one and expect delivery in late March or early April. I did some research prior to ordering but didn't find any QC issues until afterwards. I will compile all the QC issues I can and have this with us when we do the initial inspection. I don't know how I will react if there are blatant QC issues, what do you recommend Medjrd?
Thanks

Don't cut the final check until all the issues are fixed to your satisfaction. That is the carrot that will get things done.

I would suggest getting a volunteer Airstream inspector to go along to check things out.

If the list is long, call the factory VP of production to express your concerns.

QC issues in my opinion are on a trailer by trailer basis. In the 6 months that I've have my Airstream I've had zero problems. I know I'm fortunate & also know that eventually something will break down or malfunction. QC should not be an issue on any AS but unfortunately it sometimes is.

Completely understandable.

I work in the AV industry, and even those high price TV's upwards of $10k has some defects.

That is not the same I know, just wanted to point out that all things can have issues.

Mine was brand new Aug 2014 when I bought it back in 2014. There were issues. I made a detailed list and they fixed it. Two years later, and since I am anal about things, I see little things here and there. Nothing major. I will likely take mine every year to the dealer for minor upkeep, maintenance, warranty and service work.

Like all good things, the work never ends.

Some are sometimes obvious that it shouldn't be like that, but as someone said above "they are hand made".

AirStream should do a free pick up and drop off for you though.

My 1997 21ft Excella AS had zero defects and never needed a repair for 19 years. On the other hand my 25' 2016 FC RB, took delivery June 2015, and after a 5,000 mile trip I had 17 warranty items with at least 10 should have been taken care of with QC at the factory. For instance, the squirrel cage in the heater was not even connected correctly and the heater was inoperable. It got cold at night in central Idaho. LED light dimmer(s) DOA. Leaky water fittings. Two window screens fell out. Front door screen door, the top half had a 3/4 inch gap. Screen door and main door were so out of alignment they would even clamp together. And the list went on. Dealer was great upon my return, but this was ridiculous. Airstream was suppose to call me back, regional sales, and apologize for all the inconvience. I never got a call.

I second a trip to Jackson Center if it is all possible.
I kept a 60+ item running punch list up until the warranty was about to expire and scheduled a trip to Jackson Center where all items were corrected above and beyond expectations.
From September 2014 till now only one problem- tires- I upgraded to 16" wheels, LT tires, TPMS and Centramatic balancers shade-tree style- i. e. I did it myself-
Actually 2 problems- now batteries are dead- planning a converter and AGM battery upgrade-
Want a trouble free trailer? Buy mine! I'll get a new Classic and start over with mods and upgrades...
