1979 25 Ft Trade Winds Axle Replacement Part Number

I have seen several people ask this same question with great results on other models so I thought I would give mine a try.

I am going to replace the axles on my 1979 AS Trade Winds. I have the original Henschen axles out but the number on the axle is useless to Dexter. I was wondering if anybody on here has already done this for the 1979 TW AS model? If so, could you pass on the Dexter model number of the Dexter axles that you purchased?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think Dexter considers vintage Airstream axle orders low volume specials. My local Dexter dealer said you spec them, and you buy them, no refunds. Dexter has an order sheet I was asked to fill out once I measured up my axles. I think the shock mounts are welded on the swing arms by "others", not Dexter.

I needed help. I do have new axles on order for my 75 Overlander. Luke helped me with the specs and order.

Maybe Colin Hyde, Inland RV, Silver Trailer Supply, or Luke's Maintenance in Colorado would be a big help to you. These folks know vintage Airstreams and know the specs that Dexter needs to fabricate an axle that will work.

You will need to know the gross vehicle weight (GVWR) of your trailer. It is on the tag on the exterior somewhere. That is a starting point. There may be a readable tag on the axles themselves that would give the weight rating of the axle. I'm guessing it is in the 2600 pound range. That is useful too.

My advice, call one of the vintage Airstream axle dealers and get some help with the Dexter order.

David

Hi, we ordered axles through Colin Hyde in January for our 1989 Excella. The info they needed for our order was found on the weight data plate on the trailer. Supposed to be a 4 week turnaround from Dexter after ordering, been 7 weeks now, so we will call in a week to check order status. Colin's office staff was very helpful and expect our axles anytime... Colin will also be putting them on with a lift kit to give more clearance for our 16" tires... They will send axles to a distro point near you as well... Good luck!!

Dexter may still have an "Applications Manual" you can download I did mine in 2009. For my Trade Wind this is what I ordered:

#10 Torflex Standard Axle (some order #11 for wider brakes)
Hubface 79.62
Outside of Bracket 61.25
Capacity 2800#
Arm Brackets/ Arm 6, 22.5 degrees down ( 33 will give you more road clearance)
REVERSE ORIENTATION HIGH PROFILE BRACKET(important)
Top Shock Brackets

Not sure it this translates to your 79 but it should give you an idea. Send me a fax # and I will send you everything I have.

Dexter order for 76 Overlander

I got mine through Six Roblees in Bellingham WA

you could phone and ask for my measurements. They were very helpful there.

If they don't have anything I could find the order number on the axle. I ordered 3500 lb axles with 12" brakes. My trailer loaded weighs 5000 lbs on the combined rear axles. I felt the original 2750 lbs ones were too close to max.

Kkseabloom@hotmail.com if I can help.
