1962 Avalair Inspection - Illinois??

Greetings!

I just put a deposit on a 1962 22' Avalair travel trailer (SO CUTE!!). I know it's not an airstream, but this total newbie has no idea what is going on so I'm hoping for some advice.

I need an inspection to know if I want to complete the sale and I made an appt at an RV place but I'm worried because they don't usually deal with vintage. Are my worries justified? They want $350 to do this inspection. That seems like a lot to me!

I'm in Chicago northwest suburbs but the trailer is way south.

Does anyone know where I can take the trailer for a reliable inspection by someone familiar with vintage?

Thanks!
Sophia

Welcome to the forum.

Hi, I don't think that price for an inspection is too high if they check everything including the brakes and pack the bearings while they are there.

1962 Avalair Inspection - Illinois??

How far south is it located? If it's nearby, I could possibly check it out for you. Also, there is an airstream dealer in Joliet that could probably check it out. I would have time constraints this week...

Oh Becky that's very kind of you!
The trailer is in Kankakee.

I'd also love some advice on what kind of hitch to get. there's so much out there and the current owners don't know how much the trailer weighs. So I'm kinda stuck -- can't tow it to a weigh station cause I don't have a hitch.

Don't want to lay down dough for a hitch that's not right for what I'm towing!

Argh!

Well, Kankakee is REALLY far south! I'm south of Chicago (and a bit East), but not quite that far south. It would take about an hour for me to get there, so I'll have to bow out of the offer. Maybe you could post a bunch of pictures & go over some threads of what to look for in an Airstream before you buy. Really, really look for soft spots in the floor. If it smells musty, it probably has floor rot. As far as a hitch set up goes, I have used Reese hitches with weight distribution bars. If the place that will check out the trailer for you is in Kankakee (I know there's a large RV place there) they probably can hitch you up as well. That might be your best bet, if you can't find anyone else nearby to help you out. Good luck to you....sorry I can't help you out more!

Thank you Becky and to Robert as well!

I'll take it to the RV place near Kankakee. So excited! Unless they say its a total bomb I'm going to buy it. I love it so much.
