Wiring breakaway brake switch

Since I was a very little kid traveling the country in the family Airstream, I always thought the breakaway brake switch was a MECHANICAL device. Only talking to Dad on the phone last night about the state of my vintage AS renovation did he mention that the switch is actually activated electrically through the RV battery.

Considering that I hope to get my AS "camp-able" by the end of the Summer, but not finished, this was unimpressive news to me. I do not intend to get my 12V system/battery in this Summer...but still hope to tow and use my trailer.

So- what is the wiring process for said breakaway switch and can I travel without the switch in place? I have looked in several places online but can't seem to find a good, clear diagram.

Thanks! Ben

Wiring breakaway brake switch

It is easy enough to wire in, and if you just have a 12 volt battery, a very few wires are all you will need.

Battery negative post to frame ground

Battery positive to breakaway switch

Breakaway switch to the wire in the pigtail to trailer brakes, (usually the blue wire)

That is all, the battery won't be consumed, so you need nothing else.
The fact that I am opinionated does not presuppose that I am wrong......
