What size brakes?
Does anyone know what size brakes are on a 1986 SOV 25' unit? My partner had pulled the wheels and repacked the bearings and checked everything. He felt that the brakes were really worn and after a 2 day search for a "c" clip, we have decided to replace the the brakes. We are going to call around for some quotes, but need to know the size. Thanks!

Should be 12 inch.
Either measure inside of the drum, or, look at the plate that the brakes are mounted to.
If it's square, with 4 holes, then you have 10 inch brakes.
If it's round, with 5 holes, then you have 12 inch brakes.

Sure - here you go.
Trailer Parts Superstore - Brake Drum & Hub Assemblies
Scroll down to the 10" Dexter with 6x5.5 bolt pattern.
Interesting that after all the talk about 10" brakes, that AS used them for such a big heavy trailer as recent as '86.
Why replace the drums? Do you really need 12" brakes? Is it not working well as is?
No, the wheels will work as is.. as long as you do have a 6 bolt hub.

If the brakes and hub and drums are shot, you might do well to check out the axles as well.
It costs less to replace a complete axle, than it does piece by piece.

If you're drums are ok, then I'd just replace the backing plates... and use the trailer as is. I'm sure your axles may have settled a bit, but if you're pressed for money, you can do it in pieces. It's easy to order an axle "bare", and then put your newer brakes on it from there too.
I say enjoy it for awhile first.

You can upgrade the brakes to 12 inch, should you decide to replace the axles.
That would give you several thousands of pounds of extra stopping power.

Marc,
That link goes to hydraulic brakes only.
There is a link on the site for electirc RV brakes, though: Trailer Parts Superstore - Electric Trailer Brake Assemblies
Or, click here if the link wraps and won't work.
Biggest model of 10" brakes only has a 3,500 lbs per pair load rating. Does that sound right?
