On the way south NY > FL I got a SH or short indicator on my controller.

I babied it the rest the way the truck held the trailer fine.

I rebuilt the brakes back in '05 ( I didn't know how cheap complete backing plates cost) I guess I've gone 30,000 since then.

The newer henchens have 4 bolts the old plates had more if I recall.

I haven't taken the wheels off yet to measure but assume they are 12X2 but taking a tape it looks like the whole backing plate is 13"

Anyone know for sure the size, 10 or 12 X 2???

Since these are original drums I'll have them cut but if the shop says they are too bad and I need to replace a few or all what about the old bearings if they are good can they be used on new races?

Last question for now what is the part number for the inner grease seal?

I'd check w/ a DVM to make sure the problem isn't shorted wiring somewhere between the TV and the brakes, first....

All the wiring that's visible looks good, it also is an intermittent issue, as of this time the fault isn't showing.

I still want to put new brakes on regardless.

1977 Airstreams used 12 inch brakes.

That can be confirmed by looking at the backside of the backing plate, and it should show 5 bolts. If it shows 4 bolts, then someone has changed out the axles and used 10 inch brakes.

Typically, electric brake magnets last 18 to 20,000 miles.

Since you say 30,000 miles, then quite well the magnets are badly worn to the degree that they are now into the magnet coil. If that's the case, then there is your intermittent as well.

Yes, complete backing plates are the only way to go, since some of the original parts are no longer available.

Andy just took another look there are 5 bolts, so it's a 12X2 then.

If I need any drums which ones do you recommend?

I bought the axles about 3 years ago from you with the higher down angle.

Also do you have the inner seal part # please?

PS: 30,000 miles ago they were already worn!!!!

I dunno.. if you have to get drums too... I think I'd be thinking of just getting the whole new loaded axle... probably not much more.

The drums are 12 inch, 6 lugs on a 5 1/2 inch bolt circle, inner bearing # 25580 and outer bearing # 15123.

The grease seal is 10093.

Drums don't necessarily have to be replaced. They need to be turned (the outer and the magnet face) and the ones that are out of spec need to be replaced. I am having problems with the original 1981 brakes not wanting to turn all the way off all the way on my trailer. I need to replace the backing plates on mine before too long. All the magnets work but I am constantly having to back off on the adjusters because one or more wheels run hot.

The others are right. You need to check the wireing to make sure you don't have a short up stream of the brakes.

The measurement for drum brakes would be the inside diameter of the drum. Measuring the backing plate or the outside of the drum will yield a larger number like 13"

Physical inspection would be the best way of knowing what parts (drums) need replacement and what can be machined.

No measurements are needed.

All that needs to be done, is look at the backing plate mounting flange, thats welded to the spindle.

That can be easily done without taking anything apart.

Looking at the back side of a wheel, is all that's necessary.

If that plate is square, it will have 4 holes, which is for 10 inch brakes.

If that plate is round, it will have 5 holes, which is for 12 inch brakes.

JUst a follow up, installed the new backing plates/brakes, short gone.

Only thing I found was one inner seal leaked since the rebuild to where a big glob of grease was all over & around the magnet, the rest looked good.

But there is a big difference in stopping power now.

Note! never rebuild old brakes but new I found them at e trailer for $45 free shipping

POI.....Save the old cores, they can be re-built with riveted linings, all, including Dexter's, are imported. The bonding is suspect....6k/3yrs on these replacements. Dexter did warranty them, very good CS.

Re-build...for me, was not rong.
