Over the weekend I was using my Prodigy brake controller with my utility trailer. It kept coming up with an "OL" (overload) warning and the brakes would not work. (This was not fun as I was towing about 6000 lbs.)
Is there a method to testing the brake controller? What type of things go wrong with the electric brakes that may cause this except for a bad wire?
When we experienced this, the dealer brought out a homemade test rig that applied power to the brakes. After applying power they went around the wheels looking for the magnet that did not function. Our problem was a wire to ground in a drum. When the Prodigy controller senses "OL" it interrupts the power.
When the Prodigy detects a short, it interrupts power to protect the output transistors. Better no brakes and a working controller than no brakes and a blown controller.
