Original Brakes assembly??????

Hi wise ones,

I have a 53 flying cloud. I was inspecting the brakes this weekend and discovered one of the magnets was worn unevenly. Can you tell me if these are the originals? How does the magnet ware like this? I noticed Inland has some of these magnets. Would these be the correct ones for me to replace it with or can I just unbolt the the old and replace with new? Would these be considered 10" or 12" brakes? The steel backing feels pretty smooth on one side and the other has some minor grooves. Can I takes these to the local brake shop and have them turned like rotars?

Sorry for the scattered post. This happenes after a couple of glasses of wine and one hour less sleep....

Please advise,

Robert

The brakes you now have, are not the originals.

But, they at this point are old fashioned, as the current magnets are oval, not round.

The photo shows the magnet worn way past it's replacement point.

Measure the diameter of the drum. That quickly tells you the size of the brakes.

So my question is. Will the magnet in picture one replace the current one I have? Or will the setup in picture 2 just bolt on the axle for a brake upgrade? Especially Since the price different is very little. If I measured correctly in picture 4 in my previous post the drum is 11.5", so would this be considered a 12" drum?

If I can up grade the brakes that would be much better than just replacing the magnet.

Thanks so much for your time,
Robert

The round magnets are the old style.

They should not be used as a replacement for the oval magnets.

As a general rule you can buy the complete backer plate assembly for much less than the replacement magnet and shoes.

One advantage to the oval magnets is they tend to flatten to the armature better and thus not show that premature ware pattern on the edge of the round magnets.

Robert,
Go to any RV or trailer supply store & buy yourself a set of complete 12" brake backing plates. They will bolt right on.....................I've done it before & so far they have worked great for the past 9 years & 60,000 miles.

I tried that route on my 1954 Liner, purchased fully loaded backing plates. However, they new backing plates would not fit in the old drums. You might have the same problem. I solved the problem by replacing the axles.

Bill.

The old, old drums can have the outer edge that hits the backing plate, machined down, so it no longer hits the new backing plates.

Then they will work just fine.

But, also keep in mind that the old old drums are more often than not, horribly out of balance, since they are made up of three pieces, and even the Centramatics balancers typically, will not help.

Bill did your liner have the original axles? Mine look like they have been replaced at one point or another. I was at my local RV store and it looked like they had my brakes. I'll have to pull the trailer out next weekend and take my parts done there and see. My budget at the moment doesn't have the fund for new axles.

So, I went to my local RV store to purchase new 12" backer plates. As Andy has mentioned the backer plates didn't fit. In order for them to work, I would have to have them machined down in order to fit. Are their any other options or is it time to bite the bullet and get a new axle?

You don't need a new axle, but you must have the back side of the drums machined "down".

Drums back then were made very different from today.
