New Brakes-Wiring?

The etrailer diagram says to ground one of the brake wires to the chassis. Is it OK to use one of the backing plate bolts? Or do I need to run it to the frame and bolt it there?

Any point that is in contact with the fame will ground the brakes. If there is any kind of rubber mounts between the axle and the frame it will not ground. Moving parts even if they are metal do not make for good clean grounds so while it will work on your backing plate it is not the best choice.

I'd go to the frame, or better yet, go all the way back to the umbilical cord. The last thing you want is corrosion or paint interfering with the operation of your brakes. Assuming that your frame or axel mounting points are either painted or rusted, either one can prevent making a good connection and will prevent electricity flowing.

Bolt to the frame, you want your brakes to have a good ground.

Mount to the frame and make sure you allow enough wire for a Service Loop between the backer plate and the frame mounting. If your trailer has springs make sure the wires will clear all movement while on the road and allow for the trailer to be jacked up. If you have questions i would ty wrap the wires to the springs and make the service loop at the end of the spring where there will be the last movement.

The trailer manufacturers recommend using at least 12 gauge wire all the way back to the umbilical cord. I branched mine and used 10 gauge for the main run back to where it branches to the wheels.
