Need some brake source info ASAP

I'm a new member (couple of months - now ) and I've already gleaned what others have posted concerning their brake system problems. I have 1974 Argosy-26. I'm tracking down a brake problem(s). None of my magnets ohm out - all 4 are dead. So I'm guessing they are shot and need replaced! I don't have the experience tracking down sources for "whole unit" brake assemblies ( backing plate and guts ) so I need to find out a source where I can order these units and get them over-nighted. Time IS of the essence....and I'd rather not compromise safety. I have a 900 mile trip to Kentucky in about 8 days and I need to know if these units are bolt off/bolt on swaps? Any links or pointers in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

If those are OEM round magnets, you may not be able to find replacements. They've been obsolete for some time, and parts are getting scarce.

Strongly suggest you consider replacing the entire backing plate with Dexter Nevrjust brakes (self-adjusting). You will find that you are money ahead replacing the whole backing plate than attempting to replace just the magnets. You will also need to repack the bearings when you replace the backing plates as this is all best done at the same time. Both Inland RV and etrailer have these Dexter replacements.

Definitely go to Redneck Trailer Supply in Chickasha OK. They have the complete assemblies, or they have a good selection of the round (Al-Ko, Foreman, Fayette) magnets.

The backing plates assemblies are bolt-on but be sure you have LH and RH on the correct sides.

As others have stated. Replacing the backing plate with brake new braking components already installed is an easy and relative inexpensive investment.

Magnets will cost 2/3 of what new backer plates will cost. Go for the GOLD.

Fortunately I found a trailer manufacturer right here in Wichita Falls, TX where I can get the whole shootin' match at a reasonable price and I only have to drive 15 minutes to get them. My only real concern is the Dexter/Axle backing plate mounting hole pattern. From what I've been able to locate on the web and in the forums: The Dexter 10" x 2 1/4" which I believe has a 2 7/8" mount hole pattern (on center), while the axle on my Argosy (as measured last night) is a little shy of that center mark...measuring in closer to 2 13/16th" then 2 7/8". Am I safe in the assumption that I could just mount one bolt through the axle/backing plate, then run a bit through and shave the excess off the diameters of the other 3 holes to install the Dexters? Would much appreciate any info.....and, again thanks to all for your input!

Absolutely Not. Brakes have to be centered on the axle and in the drum.

I have seen backer plates that while had the same pattern for the bolts the holes were slightly larger and I had to make a set of 2 plugs on the lath to center them while I bolted the other three bolts in place. This may be the case you are facing

I found some at the local RV dealer , direct bolt on , about 50 bucks a wheel, complete assembly . Mine are 12" , are you sure yours are 10" ?

I doubt I could measure the difference between 2 7/8" (2.875) and 2 13/16" (2.813) without recourse to a micrometer. Allowing for hole slop I don't think you will need to worry about it a hole lot.

If it is a fit problem, just run a round file equal amounts in each hole.

your argosy should be running hayes axles and brakes, call a1 (alko) in indianna . install new backing plate assys that way you aren't running on 35 year old shoes. it's brakes gettingg them rolling is easy enough but being able to stop is more important. you also may find that the arc on dexters don't quite fit right in drum have encountered clearance problems in this situation on more than 1 occasion.

I just went ahead and changed out the whole brake package, they had them at Texas Trailers, so if you have a place that builds trailers in your area, they will have brakes that fit your Streamer.
