Question How thick are the brake shoes supposed to be?

Got the first wheel off and looking at the shoes...hmmm I wonder if these are as thick as they need to be?

Ideas anyone?

How thick are they?

When they wear down to the point of getting close to the metal shoe, like 1/16 inch, they should be replaced.

However, if a long trip is being planned, they should be replaced before that.

Generally speaking, under normal braking conditions, a set of 12 inch brake shoes should last about 35,000 to 40,000 miles. But again, that depends on the kind of highways used and the amount of braking.

Without actually having a new one in front of me my guess would be about 3/16th of inch. About the same as typical automotive shoes

If you are questioning the brake shoes, how are the magnets?

Generally speaking, you will use two sets of magnets, to one set of shoes.

Shoes for Baby

Looks like they are 3/16 thick and uniform. The magnets are fine. I plan to replace the whole assembly next fall with self adjusting, but maybe I will speed that plan up a bit.

Thanks for the info Andy..by the way..who supports this site financially?

There are 2 Andy R's.

One owns Inland RV Center, that's me.

The other Andy R owns this Forums, and several others.

Your question can be answered by the "other Andy R".

From your description the brake shoes have a lot more miles to give you.

Support for AIR Forums

AIR Forums is a private business owned by a different Andy R as noted in the previous post (see the link in the 3rd paragraph). He gives us wide latitude for this enthusiast-run site with a volunteer moderator staff and thousands of people who have shared their knowledge.

Newspapers & magazines have found that online advertising rates can be pretty thin. We still have to try to keep the electrons spinning at AIR. You will see some ads at the top of this or any forum page -- more if you don't log in.

An entirely voluntary source of operating funds comes from member contributions. The link to learn more is at AIR Stickers & Enhanced Accounts. $20 is the only contribution level -- nothing less and never more!

Anyone wishing to purchase advertising should contact the Help Desk (tech support) by clicking 'Contact Us' at the bottom of any page here at AIR.

Please contact a moderator if you have a question about how to use the site. But the help desk link is always there if you have no other recourse -- it is there even if you're not logged in.

The brake shoes originally had 10/32" of friction material. If you have 3/16" (6/32") remaining, you have 60% of your friction material remaining. They should be replaced when they get down to 3/32", or if you see cracks forming on the surface of the friction material.

Hi, Terry. Thank You for answering the question on how thick are the original brake shoe linings.
