Hi Michelle; I am sure glad you are not upset by my comments. In certain situations the chains will break given the weights of the vehicles which are multiplied by involved inertia. In a jack knifed situation where frame of a trailer is wrapping around your tow vehicle along with the speed of travel and differences in friction to the road between the two, as well as the multiplied leverage, chances are that chains will break. They are there however to have control in most cases over the disconnecter trailer. And yes, you are right there is no guarantee that they will. Each situation is different, resulting in different outcome. Most important, you are still with us and well, and the equipment can be repaired or replaced. Thanks, "Boatdoc"

Not ice...not an Airstream....a good lesson

Last week, after our first rain in months, a local resident was taking his BIG horse trailer up I-35 into Oklahoma. A short trip with an empty trailer so he just did a "quick and dirty" hook up to his F-350. On I-35, at hi-way speed, he came upon an accident due to slick road conditions. Hard braking, jack knife, trailer break away (with none of the safety items hooked up) the trailer separated, crossed the medium, head on'd a small car. A 22 year old girl on the way to her College classes was killed.

How very sad for this young lady, her family, and for the person who took the shortcut hooking up and caused the situation. This happens more often than people realize. I caught my neighbor with his boat heading out with no lights, no chains, racing off to the river because a buddy had called and the salmon were being caught left and right. I wouldn't let him leave until we hooked everything up. He was mad at me but his wife came over and thanked me. He's over it now but he still doesn't get it. Barry

Hello and a big thank you Melody Ranch. This is exactly what was on my mind while doing my post. Our smalest negligence can cost someone a life,
if not your own. It is not enough to be concern for yourself only, while you share the road. No excuse or apology in the world, will bring this young woman back.
I trust that Michelle has thanked God not only for saving her life, but for not involving others as well. Thanks "Boatdoc"
