Going to pick up a newly purchased 1986 Airstream. My first experiance pulling a large trailer. I recently bought a new 2012 GMC Yukon XL with HD trailering and the integrated trailer braking controller.
Does the factory controller work well with a trailer of this vintage?
Do I just plug in and adjust per the truck instructions. That easy?

Factory GMC Brake Controller - OK as is?
We have a 2013 GMC 3/4 Duramax with the integrated brake controller, and it works fine with our EB 25.
I had a Prodigy on the previous TV and I can't tell any difference.

Mine works fine on my '08 Sierra 2500 / DMax ... though to get power to it and to the trailer "charge line" I had to hook up a couple of wires to the fuse box under the hood. And the dealer was totally clueless. Had to actually go online and do a little searching to find out what to do. And the two studs to which the wires (once I found them) attached were different (and metric) sizes ... so it took a trip to the hardware store to get the proper nuts to attach them. I'm hoping that your newer machine came hooked up, but read your owner's manual CAREFULLY on this point.
The power for your brake controller should be hooked up, but there are probably 2 loose wires under your hood 1 for an after market controller and 1 for the 12 volt supply line for charging the trailer. You probably need to hook up the loose wire for 12 volt power for the trailer.
Carefully read both manuals (truck and trailer), be sure you know what type of brakes you have - my 2013 Duramax works perfectly with my 2012 Flying Cloud's electric brakes, but the truck manual makes it CRYSTAL clear the controller will not work on surge, air, or electric-over-hydraulic brakes.
If that sounds like I know what I'm talking about, don't be fooled. I asked this question here in a panic shortly before picking up my trailer!
Duramax Factory IBC No..No on electric-over-hydraulic "DISC" brakes

Congratulations on your new purchase!!
My 2012 Denali Duramax HD integrated did not work on electric-over-hydraulic "DISC" brakes. I had to go with Maxbrake controller so check to see if the PO upgraded to disc brakes before you head out.
