Envoy versus Prodigy Brake Controller

We recently purchased a 2003 Ford F250 XLT 2WD to tow our newly acquired horse trailer, which it does beautifully. The Ford will be the Airstream TV as well. The F250 came with a Tekonsha Envoy brake controller.

I also have a 2006 Tacoma V6, which I used as the Sovereign's tow vehicle. The Tacoma is OK for the Airstream, but I'm sure we'll be very happy with the F250.

I researched the forum when I was adding the brake controller for the Tacoma, installed Prodigy, and like it a lot. With the F250, however, there was no user's manual for the Envoy. I visited the Tekonsha website, and read through the "set up" for the Envoy. Holy cow. I didn't do any of that sort of thing with the Prodigy. Just installed it, and we seem to be good.

Should I move the Prodigy over to the F250 (and put Envoy in the Tacoma)? I doubt the Tacoma will be used for much towing now that we have the Ford. If we switch controllers, is there anything special I have to do wiring/install/etc?

Hi, keep the Prodigy in the Toyota, buy and install a Tekonsha P-3 in the F-250, and throw away the Envoy. Or buy a matching Prodigy for the F-250 so you can more easily understand how to set-up and adjust the controllers in each vehicle. Note: each vehicle will require its own connecting wire harness.

what's nice about the prodigy is that you can purchase the "pocket bracket" and move it between tow vehicles or stow it in your house when your not using it. At least that's what I do.

OK. I like blunt and to the point. Thanks. I'll look into moving the Prodigy to the F250 and just use it in whichever vehicle will be towing. This fall I used the Tacoma with a 22' car hauler that was loaded with a windmill tower and motor/blades, and it did great, so still want to keep a controller available to for the Tacoma.

I assume that the wiring harness that is in the F250 should be good for the Prodigy. ???

Since they are both made by Tekonsha, they may use the same harness. However, I'd verify that before you try to use it, even if they look the same (the wiring might be different).

A Ford harness for the Prodigy is only around $10, and the bracket mentioned by "crispyboy" makes it really easy to move the Prodigy between vehicles.
