E53 w/ Tekonsha brake controller lights 3rd brake light when manual lever applied

I have a 2001 E53 with a newly installed Tekonsha P3 trailer brake controller. Thanks to members on this forum for assisting with this install!

Everything works, no exceptions, everything works fine.

But there is one oddity. When the manual brake lever of the Tekonsha is applied the center brake light of the e53 lights up. No other light gets lit on trailer or car. And yes, the trailer brakes are applied.

I've been through it all, verified again and again that the signal wire is coming from the black and yellow wire of pin 10 of the LCM plug.

Does anyone else have this issue?

Thanks!

Best, ~Cars

The P3 doesn't activate the brake lights on my truck or trailer when using the manual lever. It doesn't do so on several other friends' vehicles we've tested either (Toyota Sequoia, Chevy Tahoe, etc.)

I'm pretty sure it doesn't light the 3rd brake light on the truck either, but I can't swear I checked that one... just the trailer lights and the main brake lights on the truck.

EDIT: My point is that it's probably not supposed to, so it's not a problem that it's not lighting the rest of the brake lights w/ the manual lever, but I'm not sure why it's lighting your CHMSL. Maybe there's enough "stray" voltage to illumnate those LEDs? It doesn't take much for LEDs.

Hi, why don't you just say "BMW X-5" instead of the secret code "E-53"? Not everyone on here is a BMW owner. [we own a BMW X-3] I personally don't go by the code names.

Wink You can....

......always tell a German, but you can't tell 'em much.

Have you installed the Teutonic towing harness?

One many vehicles (it may be all, if it is an FMVSS requirement) the input to the CHMSL is a separate input and control circuit than the regular brake lights. This is so you still have a signal to other drivers if there is a wiring or switch failure in the brake light circuit.

My DirecLink controller does not light the brake circuit either...have never checked the CHMSL.

The CHMSL lighting may be unique and dependent upon the particular vehicle harness and the brake controller harness.

I have a new P3 installed on the factory harness of a 2001 Ford Excursion. The manual lever on the P3 does illuminate all brake lights on the Ex as well as the Airstream.
In reading the ownwrs literature this is by design.

I'm curious though.....Did your Excursion have a factory controller pigtail, or did you have to run your own wiring? Typically, if you run your own, you tap into the brake switch circuit for controller input. Many factory pigtails may not, and many factory controller harnesses rely on body control module inputs.

I am using the Telonsha pigtail directly into the Ford harness.

Fwiw.... earlier versions of the P3 do not illuminate the brakelights.

I called Cequent a few years ago and was told different (newer) generations will have this function.

I just came back to edit my post to change E53 to 2001 BMW X5 4.4i

I'm just a gear head and had spent the day at the shop... sigh.

Anyway it was too late to edit the post so I'm happy I got it into my signature.

The Factory BMW hitch came with a wiring harness.

I'm not German.

The P3 is a new purchase, of course it could be old stock. I was expecting it to light all or none of the brake lights, not just the CHMSL (I had to look that up...). I'm thinking it is just an anomaly of the X5.

Thanks everyone.
