Disk brakes limit 2009 Dexter axle

Going to check wear on my brakes. Where can I find the wear limits on the pads? I have a 2009 25’ Classic Limited with Dexter axle, never lub bearings Being disk can’t be rocket science to check wear and if needed replace.

Lacking any other better guideline, when the friction material is thinner than the metal backing piece, it is time to replace.

If it is in fact disk brakes some pads have a small metal tattletale tab/clip

riveted on the back of the pad and bent around the side of the wear material that will go to squalling when the pad wears down to the point that it can rub your rotor, If the pad does not have one of these its just a check as you go kinda thing and if the brake lining is thinner than say 1/8 inch your livin on borrowed time.

The Dexter pads on this brake do not have a noise tab.

If you’re going to pull the wheels and inspect I’d recommend removing the pads. The pads are retained by a pin, pin has a small clip holding pin in place. Remove clip and pin.

Use a strong small wire brush and clean out pad caliper anchor area. That’s what the pads rub against. Clean pad anchor ends. Apply small amount of disc brake grease on anchors. Helps prevent corrosion and pad sticking creating a hot brake.

Inspect hoses for chafing, rubbing. They should not be rubbing on frame.

Inspect piston dust boots. These are the rubber accordion dust covers around the pistons. Torn can allow water in, rust follows. Not good.

Pads should be uniform thickness. Any noticeably thin pad should be concern, possible sticking pad overheating.

Bleeding system is number one concern for investigating any delayed braking comment. These calipers MUST be bled inboard half and outboard half separately.

Does your trailer have the revised recall brake hoses?

Your trailer has the strongest brakes ever installed on airstreams 4 piston calipers. That’s high end sports cars and up

Also recommended carrying an infrared thermometer and can check temps at rest stops. Cold rotors are not brakes.

Good thing on your part to consider inspecting.

Gary

Guidelines for replacement on cars is 3/32" riveted, 2/32" bonded. That is considered the minimum.

Hi Julie-Bob - I also replied to your same question in the Recalls thread, but you may not have seen it. I've been through this recall with our trailer. We ended up doing both the hoses and the brake actuator affected by the recall. As Gary mentioned earlier...

Bottom line - JC IS NOT going to contact you. You'll need to get your trailer to a Dealer or Authorized Repair Center. They'll inspect your trailer to see if it's part of the recall. JC supplied all the repair parts for the recalls and funded the labor. No charge to us, just the inconvenience of the time it took to get the work done.

And I see you have a Ram Cummins with a hand shaker. That’s extra awesome. I’m a clutch guy.

Thanks for the help. We removed the wheels and inspected the brake pads. All are at 9MM now so we cleaned and reinstalled the wheels. This was a piece of cake . I’m going to put this on my yearly inspection to do.

That sounds like a solid inspection plan.

Enjoy the brakes and keep an eye on the piston dust boots too when inspecting.
