Buying loaded brake backing plates

Here is a scary situation....I took off first thing in the morning on snow - use a prodigy, got my C and when I applied brakes I got voltage - but I did not test with the lever - which is how I can tell by feel how much the trailer pulls me back when the emergency pull is used - I can then adjust according to weather if need be - but it does not work so well on slippery roads - so I waited till I got closer to school where the roads where dry and the first stop sign as I slowed I did my test - YIKE I had NO brakes!!! But my trailer is small and my truck brakes big....Went to class then headed to the RV service place to see what the issue was.

Brake wires corroded - as well as the brakes too - no time and no money to replace them on the spot - so they got them up to about 50-70% so that was okay for my rig - but they would not let me go if I was any bigger.

Question - where can I get the most economical full brake set backings with magnets all in one (x4) for the little wheels on the 2005 CCD 22' International. Anywhere cheap in Ontario - or a real good deal in states and have them shipped?

Any pointing in the right direction would be great.....I think I should have the axels hubs serviced at the same time. Put all new tires last year - cause I had a blow out with dry rot on the inside of the tire.

Thanks

You can buy the brake backing plate with the brakes fully assembled for less than $100 for each wheel from a number of sources. I lot of people buy from Out of Doors Mart or Inland Andy, but just Google something like "Airstream brake assembly" and see what you get. It is cheaper to buy the whole assembly than individual parts and the newer ones have self adjusting brakes.

At the same time the wheel bearings can be repacked. You will probably have this done at an RV shop and can have the brakes wires replaced if necessary.

While there are lots of places that will ship you parts like that, they are relatively heavy (about 16 lbs per wheel) so I think it would be something to shop locally for. Shipping will kill you.

Here is a link to a US supplier of Dexter. They're sold in left and right, but I think they are pretty generic. 12" ones are usually 2" wide shoes, and 10" ones are (I think) 1.5" wide.

As you'll see in that link, $52 a wheel sounds about right. I bought four assemblies at an auto parts place in Kingston for my Sov, and I think I paid about $65 each. Wish I could remember the name of the company, they are a chain, IIRC.

But they aren't hard to find, there will be somebody in Peterborough that sells them, for sure. Big boat trailers use that type, so ask around at the marines who is the best source in town.

Good luck!

Princess Auto has them on page 24 of their flyer: 3,500 lbs electric brakes, $49.95 per wheel.

This is a great place for trailer suspensions and brake parts. In Milton Ontario. http://www.cerka.ca/axlecomp.asp

If you get new brakes you should plan to get your drums turned, too.
