Brakes stopped working

Pulling the AS yesterday and noticed that when the brakes were activated, the trailer would pull to the side and my steering wheel on the TV turned to the left. It felt as if only the left brakes were working. Tried to make adjustments to the brake controller and nothing changed. Soon after, I had no brakes.

Sounds like wiring, Check the connections under the trailer.

Brakes stopped working

Greetings adwriter73!

This is probably a long-shot, but my familiarity with Murphy's Law and a similar incident many years ago brought this to mind. I was towing my 1980 Nomad (circa 1982) when I started experiencing a similar problem with trailer brakes reacting on tow vehicle . . . brake controller adjustments had little impact on situation . . . then no brakes.

It took some investigation, but the culprit appeared to be the breakaway switch. It appeared that someone had "accidentally" gotten caught in the trip cord and pulled the pin . . . then tried to reinsert it without getting it totally seated. It was thought at the time that the brake magnets on one side burned out before the pin was reinserted . . . but the others didn't burn out until the coach was underway and movements of the cable created periodic electical interference in the poorly seated pin. In the end all of the brake magnets had to be replaced as they had been shorted out by the issues with the imporperly seated pin.

Good luck in tracing the source of your problem!

Kevin

Pull the drums...after checking voltages/resistance.

Check out the continuity of each brake assembly on the curbs side.

Above is a pic of an almost new Dexter assembly on my '78. Wire and keeper probably came off on one of the blow outs I had on my "precious" ST tires. I only run LT tires now.

Here's the bigger issue. I'm in the middle of a road trip. Currently in Southern California. Kind of stranded now until I can get this worked out. Oh what an adventure.

Brakes on the AS were checked by the local dealer in Irvine. Said they appear to be working properly. Not sure I know what to do. They were not working before. Going to hook it up to my TV and see what happens.

Could it be your 7-way had wiggled out a bit?

my one brake failure on the road came from a bad connection within the 7 pin plug on the trailer. The wire was a little short, and it pulled one connection loose. At the age of your trailer it probably came with a 9 pin thats been converted to a 7. look at the wiring, buy a little ohm meter at Lowes, and check it out.

That's exactly what happened. Glad it wasn't something major. Thanks for the tip.
