Word has it that Airstream will be changing the electric brakes in production, to self adjusting brakes.

Horray for a big improvement, assuming it becomes a reality.

I just finished installing new Dexter Nev-R-Adjust brake assemblies on my Classic. Cost was $230 including shipping for four assemblies from Trailer Parts Superstore. A very easy installation and no more adjusting! When you consider the cost of the parts for new linings, magnets, etc. this is a much better deal

It's now official.

Airstream production has switch to self adjusting brakes, for all models.

Eastern Marine started offering backing plates with the self adjusting brakes - just after I bought a set of the old style for my trailer. See 12" x 2" NEV-R-ADJUST™ Electric Brake Assy - R.H. / 6k #K23-459-00. (same place Wolverine mentions)

Where would I find out what type of axles I have to determine the brand of brakes?
On the axles themselves or in my manual.Thanks.

3 ways...
1. on the axles (and hubs)
2. email j/c with your vin # (last 6)
3. there was a YELLOW FULL SIZE CARD/paper with your purchase package...

that yellow page (or photo copy) has the DETAILS and SERIAL numbers for ...

-the frame mfr
-the axles mfr (including rating/specs)
-brakes
-and a dozen other MAJOR parts (fridge,heater, tires, jacks...)

05 classics still had hensc' but many of the safaris were already riding on dexters in 05.

Thanks.This helps me out to find it faster than just digging into all those papers in the big blue bag.
I remembered they were in between axle changes at the time.Just did not know when.I plan on doing this break job deal myself for the first time so I want to make sure everything is right on the money.

If they replace the brake backing plate with all the components at JC, they use the self adjusting ones. I had to have them replaced on one axle and that's what they used.

Hi, I love my drum brakes and self adjusters would make them even better. On my 1959 Ford Galaxie, I converted it's brakes to self adjusting; And the way they work is that when you back up and apply the brakes, a lever lifts up on the adjuster wheel, and on the first foreward stop after that, it clicks the adjuster one notch. When the brakes are properly adjusted the lever won't make it high enough to make the next click. This prevents over adjusting. On these trailer brakes, the add says that they adjust during foreward movement. I'd like to see more details on the self adjuster parts.

I have a 1976 24' Argosy. just got the Argosy and it hasn't been moved in 3 years. don't know if brakes even work, but figured start with known good and new mechanical parts. brakes are 10" x 2.25". noticed they don't sell the 10" in the nev r adjust. anyone know if its available in 10"? My main question is can my old drums be used with the new brake assemblies?

10 inch drums can only be used with 10 inch brakes.

A 12 inch set of shoes would not let you reinstall the drums.

sorry you misunderstood me...my question was if I buy a new set of 10" brake assemblies, can I use my old 10" drums or should I replace them with new 10" drums? is there a min/max dia to adhere to?

Hi, most, if not all drums have a cast-in mark or stamped, stating the maximum diameter. Usually .060 would be the max, sometimes .090 and your drum should have a marking on it like "10.060" or similar.

Unless you have tons of miles on the original drums, they will be just fine with the new brakes.

Make sure, however, that you adjust the new brakes to fit the old drums.

From reading this thread, I'm assuming that my '06 22ft. Safari does not have self adjusting brakes even though they appear to be Dexters. I have'nt backed it up for self adjusting purposes but have manually adjusted them when I noticed they were not activating as when newer. I have 5/32's of lining left on apparently bonded linings. How long until new linings are needed?

Welcome to the forums. If you have 5/32" left, you should think about replacing them when they get to 3/32". Depending on how much you tow, probably next Spring would be the time.
