Brake Shoes - Where to buy?

I have a 1971 Tradewind and it needs shoes. Magnets are good, springs are good, everything else is fine.

Do I have to buy the whole assembly? or is there somewhere I can just buy the shoes? Also - if I DO in fact need to buy the whole assembly, where do I buy replacement shoes for that should I ever need them?

You can buy just the shoes but that cost and the time to change them you are better off buying the complete assembly. Probably like $32.00 to $49.00 and 4 bolts and 2 wire nuts compared to a 15 mins. per set of shoes.

I agree with HowieE. The difference in cost is minimal and with the new plates you get new springs, new magnets, etc.

To directly answer your question, you can get just new shoes from nearly any RV place or trailer repair shop. Like everybody else here so far, I'd really lean toward replacing the entire 40 year old assemblies.

Ditto on replacing the entire backing plate assembly. All new components, not much more cost, and and peace of mind.

I bought new brake shoes at my local RV Parts store, but they told me they were out of brake socks at the time. I was advised that without proper brake socks, the brake feet could get dirty and smelly right away.

What should I do?

Your Airstream has 12 inch brakes.

12 inch brake backing plates are mounted with 5 bolts.

10 inch brake backing plates are mounted with 4 bolts.

one of the most cost effective places I've found for backing plates is eastern marine -especially if you wait for one of their sales. Standard 12x2 plates run about $40 and include the shoes, magnets, springs -

I have had the self adjusting for about 18 months now and about 5,000 miles. I did the backing plates.
No problems.

So far, no reported problems, other than they cost a little more.

There are different versions of backing plates.

As an example, 2 of the more popular 12 inch backing plates have different stopping power ratings.

One is 5200 pounds per axle and the other is 6000 pounds per axle.

Extra stopping power can save the day should the tow vehicle brakes fail. It does happen.

Also, keep in mind that all electric brake ratings assume that the brakes are "perfectly" adjusted, and that the shoes are not glazed.

As electric brakes wear, their stopping power decreases.

I recently purchased complete Dexter 12" x 2" self adjusting brake assemblies from E Trailer.com

Includes back plate, shoes, springs, magnets complete assembly -

Also bought new drums as the drums were worn where the magnets had deeply scoured the armature portion of the drums. They came complete with bearings and seals.

Gives a feeling of comfort knowing all is new.

Went the self adjusting route on our '85 Excella. No problems and all seems to be working just fine. Did the complete assembly since I didn't have a history on the maintenance. Easy job. The nuts for the backing plates are a bear to reach. Get a set of ratcheting box wrenches at Sears. You'll be glad you did. But the job is easy and straightforward.

Go for it.

You should launder your existing brake socks frequently, using a quality detergent, until you can find more. If odor continues to be a problem, there are sprays to help control it.

OK I have been dealing with brakes for over 55 years and have not yet run across Brake Socks. What are you referring to?

A Picture if possible.

Replace the complete backing plates, as some parts of the brakes that you have, are no longer available.

The shoes alone cost almost as much as the complete backing plates.

Are these brake shoes pretty generic? Is there a reason my local Advance Autoparts can't get these things? I need to pull my hubs and see what is going on in there but I don't have time to wait on parts nor do I have the money to just go out and buy new backing plates if I don't need them. I may need new shoes. I am going to replace the axels at some point but I can't do everything all at once in a month's time. I need to get my floor back in. I will have some breathing room after October. My brakes are working to some degree already but they do need to be checked.
