Brake magnets?

How do i know if the brake magnet on my '59 tradewind needs to be replaced? It seems to be gripping ok when power is applied. My concern is the face of the magnet looks rather worn and ground down. I see metal. Is this normal? Pic attached.

The metal showing is normal. when the friction material is worn through or worse you can see see wire where the friction material should be it is replacement time. about that time the slots in the 3 screws will be gone also
