Brake Controller Recommendations

What brake controller would you recommend for a 2008 Ram 2500?

Prodigy P3 unless it has a built in controller. There have been other forum posts where the built in controller had issues. So if you have the built in try it other wise Prodigy.

I have been using the Tekonsha Primus IQ Trailer Brake Controller (1 to 3 Axles - Proportional) installed in our 1995 F250 to control the brakes on our 1987 Avion 34W. It installed easily in our truck because it was already wired for towing. All I had to do was find a place to mount the bracket. It fit nicely in an existing cubbyhole at about 5 o'clock in relation to the steering wheel.

Between the controller and 6 new brake assemblies, It has done a great job of helping stop this heavy trailer.

I set it for load at the start and let it do the rest.

I own one the very best brake controllers ever made - problem is that it is no longer made - Max Brake.
If buying new I would opt for the Direclink Brake controller. It as close as you will get to smooth, proportional braking now that Max Brake is gone.
I once had Prodigy P2 - which I wouldn't even recommend as a paper weight.

I second the nomination for the Direclink. I switched from the Prodigy P3 and wouldn't even think of going back. Direclink is very smooth and is also excellent at slow parking lot or campground speeds--no jerking.

I would love to hear from the different posters that have a preference of one controller of another. I haven't had any problems with our Primus IQ, so all I have are positive things to say about it. If I could get some input like that, I'm sure it would help others looking for a controller. What negatives have you experienced? What do you like about the one(s) you recommend? All I know about our Primus IQ is that is seems to do a good job of stopping our trailer.

I am a firm believer in "you get what you pay for", so if there is a "better" controller than what I have, I would consider replacing it if I can justify the change/improvement.

I have a Prodigy and when properly set up there is no jerking. What I like about it the best is the boost function. I set mine up as per instructions and it stops smoothly without issue. When on the road in hilly terrain I will up the boost simply by hitting the button. When I get into steep downhill situations I will boost it up again. Once I failed to set it back to normal and I noticed the grabbing when in town.

I really like how easy it is to set up and use.

I have the P3, it's great,
Have towed with a P2, a Primus, a Factory Ford F250 controller and a controller similar to a voyager.
The P3 is much smoother and easier to adjust than any of the others I've used. I have 2 trailers and 2 tow vehicles, and have towed other trailers as well with the P3, it's easy to adjust to match the load to the tow vehicle.

I also had excellent customer service from Tekonsha, very helpful and accommodating!

This is the one to have. The NE version so that you can someday upgrade the trailer to antilock disc brakes. See the test and review on MR TRUCK.

I have disc brakes on my PanAm and Classic 34's.... Use the P3 on both. Couldn't be happier!

I've read some and watched demos I cant see the difference between p3 and p2

I just picked up this truck on Friday. I brought it directly to a truck shop to have running boards and mud flaps installed (the running boards are so my wife and dogs can get in the truck). They had Primus controllers in stock so I had them put one in too. I will give you all an update after my first trip.

Another vote for the P3. It also has a nifty back-up feature that disables the brakes so you can go back & forth till you get it just the way you want (unless of course, you're one of the exceptional few that doesn't need to go back & forth!). Also, really like the adjust on the fly settings when entering mountainous areas. Just plain intuitive.
