Brake Controller

Hi all,

I'm almost finished with my 53' Flying Cloud. This weekend is its maiden voyage after a 4 month restoring event. Any way, my father tells me since I have eletric magnetic brakes, I don't need a break controller. He says the the 12v coming from my TV will activate the brakes and will be enough to stop the trailer and my TV.Is this true? My TV is a 2000 Dodge Durango, 4 x 4. 4.7 Magnum. Please help me clarify this before I leave on the first trip. I have attached a pic of my brake set up.

You need a brake controller to very the voltage to the brakes. If you put straight 12 volts to the brakes you will not be able to move the trailer as the brakes will be fully applied. You will also need a break away switch.

Hi Robert,

You DO need a controller, it is what sends the PROPORTIONED 12v current to your trailer brakes.

As mentioned above, with out the controller, the electric trailer brakes will lock up under full application. You may scratch your head and wonder, what's all that noise behind me. And you may wonder why does the tow vehicle jerk back every time I step on the brake?

No controller, the brakes would be full on or full off.

Well as usual, the advise I have received here was correct. I went out and bought a prodigy. Went home and bet my father that his idea was wrong. Of course he stood by his idea. Long story short he has to buy all of the beverages for this weekends trip. Thanks again for the advise.

Yea, you gotta have a controller. Without it, it's all on or all off, which to me translates to locked or near locked wheels on the trailer or nothing at all.
