Question '71 Overlander Brakes locking in reverse.

I'm on my honeymoon right now and we're just north of Mount Rushmore. While we were on the way here I tried to back up the overlander and brakes locked up! I disconnected the umbilical and they released. This happens every single time I try to back up the trailer. Has anyone ever heard of this problem?

Sounds lie the back up light circuit is also feeding the brakes.

it is possible that your trailer plug or tow vehicle plug is not wired correctly. if the brakes do not activate going forward, the brake and reverse light wires might be reversed.

if the reverse light goes on when you hit the brakes in drive, check for a short like andy suggested.

these diagrams might help:

the colors at each connector might not match and need to be verified.

At least you won't roll backwards If it is the back up lights I would just disconnect that one wire and deal with it when you get home..

Thanks everybody. I didn't realize that the color coding changed with a modern 7 pin flat plug. I got that problem resolved. Now I have another one...
